Re:It's RULES CHANGE time - 2008/06/30 04:23
Alright. Here's my input for consideration.
-one thing that might be a good idea is to add a small reference into the armour section that translates the thicknesses we use for leather into the Oz measurement that leather is sold by and perhapse a visual reference to show how thick 1/16 and 3/16 looks.
-Clairify that laten metals(copper alloys) are kosher stand ins for steel in metal armour. Their strenght is inbetween mild steel and stainless steel so there is no reason for anyone to penalize them for being soft.
-Lower the metal thickness required for metal scales. As it stands technically metal scales have to be 16 gauge. Scales by their very nature overlap, to the extent most places will have double the thickness of the material used for the scales and in places triple the thickness. The 16 gauge thickness requirement for metal scales presents a myrad of problems. Firstly a cuirass plated in scales would likely weigh upwards of 40 pounds but afford only the protection of a butted hamata. Anothe thing to consider is that no commercial manufacturer makes 16 gauge thick scales. I propose that the thickness for scales be slightly under 1mm or simply say that metal scales do not have to adhere be 16 gauge.
-Perhaps this is a foolish idea, but maybe we could remove the distinction between round and non round sheilds and only require that sheilds conform to the size requirement for their bracket.
-Another thing that may be of use is to reintroduce the pavase for seige senarios. I think that this would likely make seige battles more like battles rather than archers stand behind the guys with sheilds while the castle team picks people off slowly in a miserable stalemate senario. I recall somthing like this wa seen in he 1st version of the rules, perhaps the old rule could be he basis of this new one?
-Another thing that I would like see happen is to see the thickness required for the wire in rivited maille dropped to about 1mm, even at this thickness it is several times more strong than a 16 gauge butted shirt.
-Lastly I belive that the sheet metal for plate armour thickness should be dropped to around 18 gauge. Historically most armour of this type was around 1mm on average in thickness with 16 gauge only seeing use in things like jousting armour, "bullet proof" armour, post-period parade armour and such. It Would likely also have the benefit of encourageing the use and productions of plate armour, which is always a crowd pleaser. It would also have the benefit of making more off the shelf armour useable in amtgard. Now I'm not saying drop metal thicknesses all around, things like butted haubreks practically need to be 16 gauge to hold up under their own weight. It just seems to me that if we used a more practical thickness like that which was used in period it would have a positive effect on amtgard in that armour would be somthing wears not somthing one cringes at the thought of lugging around only as long as necesary.
Now feel free to flame away, these were just some ideas that I've thrown around in my head for a while that seemed good enough to share.
