would you or would you not - 2006/02/07 20:43 I have the opportunity on april 10 to work as a carnie in Alaska for 5 months. I would come back with at least $12,000 in Sept. but i would miss all summer including rakis. but i could afford to go to all the other events during the year. this is a serious decision and i need some SERIOUS advice. You cannot change your destination overnight,
but you can change your direction overnight.

Re:would you or would you not - 2006/02/07 21:50 Well, if you are ok with being a carnie, and could use the 12k...id sure take it up.

There will be more rakis's and thats quite a chunk. Deffinitely worth thinking about.

I guess it depends on whether or not you could use 12grand more than going to Rakis this year... I dont know your financial situation as well as you do, so thats something to consider at least

Re:would you or would you not - 2006/02/07 21:51 get paid to see alaska for 5 months ? Those are the things that make good stories and a life time of memories. They are also things that you cant do once you get into a major relationship and / or get older and get a real job.

Re:would you or would you not - 2006/02/07 22:07 i havent left the country in my life so i think this could be the opportunity ive been waiting for. I also havent missed a month let alone 5 months of swordfighting since i started. I dont want to get rusty. Its so hard for me even miss one weekend of killin. If i go ill have to bring some swords to practice with the carnies. You cannot change your destination overnight,
but you can change your direction overnight.

Re:would you or would you not - 2006/02/08 08:55 I am with Takezu. Pull the trigger on somehting like this while you are young. I am sure some of it will suck but on the whole it should be a unique chance to make serious cash and see some new things.

There are a few Alaskan amtgard groups, I am sure you would get near them at some point in the 5 months. Or just get them to put you into a booth.

Step right up... Think you can punk me with a sword? Win fabulous prizes and awesome gifts for your lady.... Its easy you just have to touch me with this foam sword.... what could be easier.

Then you get to punk strangers all day long.

Ok that is a bit far fetched but there are groups in Alaska.

Re:would you or would you not - 2006/02/08 09:54 go for it bro, this is a great opportunity to do something new, I think it would
be good for you.

p.s. then you would miss Rakis but you could afford to go to SKBC or banner
wars.. : )

I say go for it, I'll miss you but it's only 5 months, ask DTM about Alaska,
he'd tell you to go for it too.

Re:would you or would you not - 2006/02/08 09:57 actually, only one group exists in AK. in fairbanks, which is pretty much dead center of the state. don death is movingto ankorage though and may be starting one up there.

few things. be ABSOLUTELY sure this is a carnie job, not a crab fishing or other such job. the crab fishing industry does something very similar, hires college age folks over the summer to come up and try not to get killed or lose body parts. it is one of hte single most dangerous jobs in the world.

bear in mind that these guys are gonna work you to the bone. chances are likely you'll be doing a midnight sun festival for a good portion of it. that means 48 hours or more, on your feet doing your job. since it won't be getting dark, they keep things running non stop. makes more money that way. you can sleep inbetween towns. assuming you can sleep in daylight.

also find out whether or not room and board comes out of your 12k or if its included. some of these jobs are a scam. they bring you out to hte middle of frikkin no where, and explain that you don't get a room, and you have to buy your own meals.... at carnival prices. so you may be making 50 bucks a day, but you are giving 30 bucks right back to em.

also make sure if they are paying for airfaire both directions. including if you get fired or let go for some reason. a ticket home can be hella expensive depending on where yer at.

alaska is absolutely gorgeous. this would be something you'll never forget. but make sure you aren't gettign screwed.
