Old Bard Revision - 2006/01/30 21:38 Way, way, waaaaay back the Iron Mountains had a bard revision they were testing. It was OFF THE HOOK! Does anyone have a copy of that bard? I'd like to look at it.

Re:Old Bard Revision - 2006/01/31 09:58 I'm not familiar with any IM bard revision,
though I've only been in the IM for 9 years..

here's the Bard as written in the current (7.0) rules:
7.0 rules Bard

I wrote up an archtype for playing a Skald,
basically a "how to" guide for playing a viking skald by using the existing
bard class (Rewth's editing it and it will be in an upcoming book that he's
working on with the Amt7 publishing group)

I don't know if this is what you were looking for, it's the only alternative
bard type thing I've ever heard of.

Skald - Norse Bard

The Norse Skald, or poet, was not your typical daydreaming traveling merry
man. The average Skald was both a skilled fighter and word-smith.

Skaldic poetry was composed using extremely difficult forms and meter,
and was generally tailored to warriors. Typical skaldic poetry was
composed to honor the hosts of halls, fallen warriors, kings, and to boast
of ones own greatness. Composing skaldic poetry requires a true mastery
of language and understanding of the eddas - skalds frequently
used "Kenning's" in their works, a "Kenning" was a way to describe
something with words that were not that thing, for example, they might
describe "battle" as "the song of spears," or instead of saying "the ocean"
a kenning that has been used is "the whale road."

Recommended Instruments : harp, flute, pan pipe
The use of instruments by vikings/norse is not well documented,
in the Atlamál (the story of Gunnar) Gunnar is thrown into a snake pit and
is said to play a harp with his toes to soothe the snakes, presumably
because his hands are bound.
In the writing Morkinskinna, King Haraldr Harđráđi claims to have mastered
harp-playing and poetry.
A 10th century bone flute was found in Birka, and portions of a wooden pan
pipe have been found at York.

Famous Skalds : Egil Skallagrimson, Snorri Sturlusson, Thjóđólfr of Hvinir

Garb: For men a basic tunic worn with an under tunic, a belt, trousers,
and leather shoes were the norm. a T-tunic would work well, and clothing
could be done simply or with allot of detailed tablet-woven gripping beasts
and animals on the hemming. Cloaks or jackets and hats were also worn.
for more info - men's garb
For women an under-dress, gown, and an overdress or apron were
common, there were variations and different styles used. It was common
for men and women to wear jewelry, men usually wore arm rings or
pendants such as thor's hammers, women wore more ornate jewelry, using
glass beads, amber, and silver. Brooches were worn by women as well.

Skald spell list (as 6th level Bard)

6th level
buy voice (for some druid magic, which we'll discuss later)
and maybe a release for those sticky "raids gone bad" situations.
5th level
buy mimic - try mimicking barbarian on your last life, cast all your
remaining spells, then cast mimic & go berserk.
and maybe a confusion or yield
4th level
buy warskill - you're a warrior poet remember? get a shield and/or a sword!
buy honor duel - settle on the field disputes with trials of holmgang or einvigi
buy awe/fear - to represent runic workings to inspire terror or awe
buy berserk - make your own army of berserks or 'bear-shirts'
3rd level
buy extension - runes were often used to increase the duration or potency
of magical workings by repeating the same rune
buy imbue, confidence or sleep - just consider your ability to make others
more powerful or confident or fall asleep through rune work.
Imbue doesn't really fit in so well, but it gives you more spells on the lower
levels that are appropriate.
2nd level
buy protection from subdual and legend - tell tales of the viking heroes and
gods and goddesses, you can find lots of information easily, check out
the Icelandic Sagas (like Egil's Saga), the Poetic and Prose Edda's, and
for well researched historical Internet sources check out :
northvegr
1st level
buy protection from control
buy presence - the skill of the Norse Skald was certainly felt, captivating
feast halls with wondrous meters, saving ones skin from certain execution,
and passing down a rich culture to ones descendants.
buy charm - give your charmed victims things to do that mirror the saga's
of the gods! Take a pair of nail clippers onto the field and make sure no one leaves the field that day with timber for Naglfar!*

Druid Magic
you get 5 magic points to spend, not 5 magics, usable from any druid level.
pick and choose spells that you want from this list:
warp wood, finger of death, call lightning, flameblade, stoneskin/barkskin,
protection from flame, bladesharp/bludgeon

*Naglfar is the boat made from the nails of dead men that the
enemies of the Norse gods (Juton, or giants) ride to Asgard for the final
battle of Ragnarök. The ship's name means "Wraith ferry,"
but Snorri Sturlusson in the Prose Edda provides a folk etymology of
"Nail ferry," urging that no dead be buried with uncut fingernails,
lest more material be added to it.
