Guildmaster of Monks Test - 2006/01/20 00:54Posting this up here because my home computer doesn't have internet access, and I figure I can always use a critique. Feel free to quiz yourself, and we'll see if my answers match up to you folks. The multiple heal chant questions are quite intentional.
MONK TEST - LEVEL 1 MONK
1. A 6th level Archer shoots an arrow at you. You block it successfully with your sword. The Archer yells 'Monk, Flame Arrow!' at you. What has happened to you and your sword?
2. Somebody throws five throwing daggers at you. You block #1 with your sword. #2 bounces off a nearby tree, and hits you in the chest. #3 strikes your planted foot. #4 hits your open palm. #5 nicks the pants leg of your garb, but doesn't deflect, nor do you feel contact. Are you dead?
3. Your teammate dies in front of you, and drops his polearm with the 'wounds kill' enchantment on it. You're a newbie monk, so you love polearms. You pick it up, and start swinging, shouting 'Wounds kill! Wounds kill!'. Where's the error here? (Yes, you asked the dead fellow if you could use it, first.)
4. Name all the weapons and abilities, and the life count of a 1st level monk.
5. Recite the Heal chant.
MONK TEST - LEVEL 2 MONK
1. An arrow strikes your hand, while holding a short sword. Are you wounded? Why or why not?
2. An assassin hits you with a poisoned arrow, in the leg. They tell you you have a count of fifty to live, and run off. What do you say in response?
3. Your healer is killed in front of you, and is shattered (has run out of lives for the battlegame). You use your Transfer Life ability on him, however you are on your last life, as well. The healer in turn tries to resurrect you, out of gratitude for your noble sacrifice. What is the end result of this exchange?
4. You block an arrow with a throwing weapon in your hand, and deflect it from hitting a team mate, had it continued along it's path. Is your throwing weapon destroyed? What else happened?
5. Describe how to make a safe, legal throwing weapon. What cover, what core, what filling are acceptable? Be descriptive, please.
MONK TEST - LEVEL 3 MONK
1. You charge your Touch of Death ability, but you are killed before you use it on anyone. What happens to it?
2. You sneak up behind a warrior, and manage to grab his catcher's gear with your hand, and use Touch of Death. You didn't actually touch skin or garb, though. Are they dead?
3. A 6th level assassin uses Touch of Death on you, simultaneously as you use Touch of Death on him. Who dies?
4. You charge at a 6th level Bard. He shouts 'Presence' as you go to swing at him. What is he talking about, and what do you do in response?
5. Name three spells you are now immune to at this level.
MONK TEST - LEVEL 4 MONK
1. Your hands are empty, and you decide to go on a blocking fest, to show off your new ability. In turn, you block: a throwing dagger a 5 point arrow a javelin a penetration arrow two pellets from a scattershot catapult (hell of a battlegame, this) an acid bolt from a druid an entangle ball from a healer and finally a sphere of anniliation from that scary wizard fellow. When did you die?
2. You use your Banish ability on a charging warrior. They stop in confusion, as you finish your chant. What is the chant for Banish, and what effect did it have on the warrior, other than their puzzlement?
3. You grab a javelin out of midair that was thrown at you, and hurl it right back at your opponent. Is this legal?
4. You sneak up on a distracted magic user, and use Touch of Death on them. They shout 'Protect!' and stab you with a dagger. Why did you get owned?
5. Recite the Heal chant.
MONK TEST - LEVEL 5 MONK
1. You're surrounded by four attackers. You give a heavy sigh, and then discharge your Touch of Death on yourself, instead of battling all of them. They turn away laughing, and are extremely surprised when you start stabbing them in their exposed backs. Are you cheating?
2. Can you heal yourself while in an active Sanctuary chant?
3. You're walking around in Sanctuary, and a warrior walks up and starts repeatedly tapping you with their sword, preventing you from leaving Sanctuary or using Touch of Death on them, as you will die the moment you attack. Name three possible responses, all legal and without resorting to pimpslapping.
4. You stay in Sanctuary with your Touch of Death enchantment charged. The round ends, however. The reeves call 'Speed Time!'. Do you have to return to base? Also, can you stay in Sanctuary through a speed time? What happens to your Touch of Death?
5. You catch a throwing weapon thrown at you while you are in Sanctuary. You drop it on the ground distainfully, immediately after catching it (It was a lousy throw), and don't employ it as a weapon. Have you broken Sanctuary? If so, by the letter of the rules, or the spirit of the rules? If not, what action could you have taken that WOULD have broken Sanctuary?
MONK TEST - LEVEL 6 MONK
1. That 6th level Bard is back. You charge him, and he shouts 'Presence!' again. What is your response?
2. An assassin yells this at you, when you're within 20' of him: What is he doing to you, and what is the effect? On you, specifically?
3. You are attacked with a Finger of Death spell, a Yield spell, a Poisoned Arrow (taken in the arm), and an Assassin's Trap spell.
4. You are surrounded by 3 archers, bows trained on you, while in Sanctuary. All are just outside of 20'. Aside from leet monkness, name two options you have to get yourself out of this situation alive.

Re:Guildmaster of Monks Test - 2006/01/20 07:42MONK TEST - LEVEL 6 MONK
3. You are attacked with a Finger of Death spell, a Yield spell, a Poisoned Arrow (taken in the arm), and an Assassin's Trap spell.
So you're going to test the prospective 6th level Monk by doing a lot of things to them that they're immune to, and then shoot them in the arm with an arrow?

this question seems a bit misleading. as i see it, yes. you are dead. #2 kills you. trees don't cause bounces, as defined by our rules only the ground does. so off a tree is more accurately called a deflection. deflections that strike true are still valid.
and 4 takes your arm as well. i would change hte word bounce to deflection in this question jsut to avoid confusion.
MONK TEST - LEVEL 2 MONK
2. An assassin hits you with a poisoned arrow, in the leg. They tell you you have a count of fifty to live, and run off. What do you say in response?
1. immune. 2. poison is a 100 count. 3... this is silly... but arrows aren't weapons, they are ammunition, the bow is the weapon. so they can not be poisoned. (but thats a dumb interpretation so ignore it)
3. Your healer is killed in front of you, and is shattered (has run out of lives for the battlegame). You use your Transfer Life ability on him, however you are on your last life, as well. The healer in turn tries to resurrect you, out of gratitude for your noble sacrifice. What is the end result of this exchange?
heh... had to look this one up. never knew that.
5. Describe how to make a safe, legal throwing weapon. What cover, what core, what filling are acceptable? Be descriptive, please.
easy. don't emulate ANYTHING currently seen on the fields in the Northern Holdfast. --shakes head sadly--
2. You sneak up behind a warrior, and manage to grab his catcher's gear with your hand, and use Touch of Death. You didn't actually touch skin or garb, though. Are they dead?
this is also confusingly presented. catcher's gear IS garb.
3. A 6th level assassin uses Touch of Death on you, simultaneously as you use Touch of Death on him. Who dies?
the catholic schoolgirl that started the slap fight in the first place.
When did you die?
die? arguably never. assuming the acid bolt was "blocked" then it hit your hand.... you are now armed. the entangle will entangle you. the sphere... here's where it gets wierd... the sphere destroyes anything it hits. however. you are entangled. entangle states that you may not be effected by anythign unless listed in the description of entangle... sphere isn't listed there. i'm not sure how that works out in the end.
3. You grab a javelin out of midair that was thrown at you, and hurl it right back at your opponent. Is this legal?
not for you. monks can't use javalins... so you can't throw it back. but you can grab it out of hte air. for that matter... ANYONE can grab a javalin out of hte air. only the tip is deadly.
4. You sneak up on a distracted magic user, and use Touch of Death on them. They shout 'Protect!' and stab you with a dagger. Why did you get owned?
cuz you didn't stick em with a dagger 4 times just to be sure.
Are you cheating?
arguably yes. pretendning to be killed by it is kinda cheating. the fact that your touch of death had no effect on you would be readily apparent to those facing you. implying that it isn't simply because they are ignorant of your immunity, waiting for them to assume you are now dead and walk off... i'd call that deriving a battle field advantage from grey areas in the rules.
its kinda the same thing as pulling a deadmans walk. acting like you are dead so the other team ignores you, then attacking them when "i never actually called dead or put my sword above my head". its cheesy.
2. Can you heal yourself while in an active Sanctuary chant?
no. not no, but hell no. can't be done. i REALLY hope tis is the answer yer looking for here.
3. You're walking around in Sanctuary, and a warrior walks up and starts repeatedly tapping you with their sword, preventing you from leaving Sanctuary or using Touch of Death on them, as you will die the moment you attack. Name three possible responses, all legal and without resorting to pimpslapping.
inform the warrior that he's cheating. repeatedly tapping is effectively a hostile action. then touch of death him and explain that if he started his swing before you touched him then he was being hostile. if he didn't start it prior to you doing it, then he was dead before it started and therefor not shot in motion.
MONK TEST - LEVEL 6 MONK 2. An assassin yells this at you, when you're within 20' of him: What is he doing to you, and what is the effect? On you, specifically?
he yells nothing? i'm guessing you want the trap chant here.
3. You are attacked with a Finger of Death spell, a Yield spell, a Poisoned Arrow (taken in the arm), and an Assassin's Trap spell.
damn... that sucks. what is the question?
4. You are surrounded by 3 archers, bows trained on you, while in Sanctuary. All are just outside of 20'. Aside from leet monkness, name two options you have to get yourself out of this situation alive.
begging? i'm actually at a loss here... i don't see anything that gets you out of this... help?
ok... wait... you could argue that at 5th level you became immune to death. there for you are immortal and can not longer be killed. those archers and thier puny mortal weapons are insignificant.

Re:Guildmaster of Monks Test - 2006/01/20 14:22Rewth, you're the king.
I rushed the test up as I was at work 'till quite late, but definitely some good input.
Some of the questions are intentionally misleading, but almost all of these are situations I've had to deal with as I levelled through Monk. I want a newbie to at least be prepared for some of it, and not get played by an exploitation or gray area of the rules, or just by doing something the rules don't cover.
Alot of newbies aren't sure if they lose an arm if they get hit by a projectile in the hand. An archer using a special arrow on you might be a special case, and I've had newbies ask me if a penetration arrow is still just an arrow to monks. The 'tap tap tap' thing in Sanctuary.. Oy.. even I wasn't sure about that.
I'll revise these s'more, definitely. Anybody else spots something else wrong, feel free to quibble at me. I'll fine-tune this eventually. Some of the answers are meant to be a bit puzzling, as I'm trying to put stuff that may actually happen to a levelling monk in there that they would have questions about.Quiet

Re:Guildmaster of Monks Test - 2006/01/20 14:33I wouldn't publish this because if anybody needs to take that test, they know EXACTLY what to study. That is just a recommendation thoughCruz Hús Vetra Skald "Sand is over rated, it is just a bunch of tiny rocks..." "The more you sweat during practice the less you bleed in battle"

Re:Guildmaster of Monks Test - 2006/01/20 16:03thast actually totally ok.... if they know exactly what to study, then they will be able to pass.
the key of these tests isn't to weed out the unknowledgeable, but to make sure everyone playing hte class is knowledgeable... do you see the difference?
basically, you WANT people to pass. cuz in order to pass they obviously know the basics of thier class. yes. some people will memorize it and forget it all immediately after... but thats why my test includes review as you progress... see next post on my Archers Test."But right now I'm a little concerned about my pants, since I don't know where they are." - Valathina Nailo

Re:Guildmaster of Monks Test - 2006/01/20 16:05yeah, if someone says "Ha! I'll research Quiet's test before hand then I'm sure to pass, I'll just memorize all the answers"
that ends in the same result as them learning the class in order to know what they're doing, both situations result in them learning their class..
it's like tricking lazy people into learning! : )Dragoon Strike First. Strike Hard. No Mercy. Hús Vetra Skald IMU
