Axe heads - 2005/08/24 17:07So... who's got a good method to build an axe head? Preferably one that is field-legal Superstar, do you think you're what they say you are?

Re:Axe heads - 2005/08/24 17:51made an axe back for IFGS once. i sandwiched about 5 layers of cardboard together around the handle and the covered it with blue foam. was heavy, but it worked. nice part was it had all kinds of pointy bits on it and looked awesome. downside was it wouldn't have been legal in amtgard.
my suggestion for doing it in amtgard would be to use shield foam. there is a light blue density that its notably softer (though still rigid) than the white foam. i believe nate has some of it, cuz the blank i got from him is made from it.
cut the shield foam to the shape tha tyou want. attach to your handle (use liberal amounts of tape, and prolly some glue as well. then i'd split lengths of fun noodle lengthwise and trim the entire edge of the axe with it. leaving the hollow of hte core completely unfilled.
adda hand sewn cover from spandex (its forgiving, and will help to bind it together even more) and call it good.
remember that the non striking surface of the haft STILL must be strike legal to 2/3 the length under the 7.0 rules.
what you'll end up with will still be heavy, and you may still have problems with the head coming loose. but it should work.

Re:Axe heads - 2005/08/24 18:22i made an axe for my little brother where i used halves of mega noodles and layerd them to build the entire axe head and blade. its heavy and not practicle to use on the field but i havn't seen an axe that is worth a shit yet nor someone using an axe for that matter. i suggest not using one at all.I'm the mighty Lion in the thicket who be spying on the wicked- Shabaz the Diciple

Re:Axe heads - 2005/08/24 21:18Yeah... axes are in the same boat as quarterstaffs in terms of effectiveness in Amtgard combat.
All the weight is at the very end of the weapon, making it supremely tip-heavy. Even if you counterbalance it at the pommel somehow, it's still ridiculously heavy compared to your average short sword.
Being a flatblade, you can't hit them with the flat of the blade anyway.
Weight, weight, weight.. It's a sword with a dead elephant on it, practically.Quiet

Re:Axe heads - 2005/08/25 08:10actually quiet, there is an entire school of thought that really enjoys using a heavy weapon. they generally fixate on maces, but hammers or axes would be effectively the same thing.
they are great offhand weapons. you can use em to block virtually anything without much effort. and they are great at powering through the blocks of ultra lights. nothing tends to stun an opponant more than a good wump to the shield or weapon with something 4 times heavier than he's used to. generally leaving him open to a shot from your own ultra light.
in texas they are still used somewhat prevalently. the im's weapon culture jsut doesn't see them very often."But right now I'm a little concerned about my pants, since I don't know where they are." - Valathina Nailo

Re:Axe heads - 2005/08/25 11:19I agree with you there. One of my shorties is a fair bit heavier than it's mate, so that one typically blocks better, while being harder to strike with.
I guess it's just my own play style. If they're close enough to start wailing on me, they're too close. I choose when they get close, and that's when I'm attacking. Ideally, I kill them before they can kill me. Realistically I'll take a wound, but they'll either be equally wounded, or dead.Quiet

Re:Axe heads - 2005/08/25 11:30but that tactic is much easier for tall, monkey armed folks like you and i. shorter folks have to take hte fight up close and personal."But right now I'm a little concerned about my pants, since I don't know where they are." - Valathina Nailo

Re:Axe heads - 2005/08/25 13:46nah im sticking with axes are worthless period. if you are getting crushed through your own block from a baseball swing with a battle axe than you need some rip fuel, creatine, and 3 days of full body free weight lifting every week.

yeah, I totally prefer maces, you can make a tip heavy weapon that just wraps itself for you, like an axe, but you don't have to worry about hitting with a single edge on a mace, more effective, as far as this type of weapon goes.Dragoon Strike First. Strike Hard. No Mercy. Hús Vetra Skald IMU

Re:Axe heads - 2005/08/25 15:16well, an axe can also be useful for strategically "positioning" your opponants shield...
and, the haft is strike legal. it has to be. the head is jsut "additionally strike legal" and a flat blade."But right now I'm a little concerned about my pants, since I don't know where they are." - Valathina Nailo

Re:Axe heads - 2005/08/25 15:29...and a pile of crap could be used effectively to fling into your apponent's face causing him to choke under the horribly intoxicating aroma but i would rather just cut of his head and Then shit down his neck.I'm the mighty Lion in the thicket who be spying on the wicked- Shabaz the Diciple

Ummm.... No. Poo is not Amtgard Legal as a throwing weapon, unless you have incredibly mutated bowels. Using a well made axe as a can opener for turtlers is a great strategy. Besides, holding a corpse still so that you could deficate down a dissected windpipe is probably grappling, and not allowed in our game either.

Re:Axe heads - 2005/08/26 21:35hey cull... I don't know if you're lookin fer regular axes or for throwing axes... three/four layers of camp pad that has been rubber cemented together and then 'carved' or cut to shape work great for throwing axes... just wrap the entire thing in a layer of duct tape and then cover with athletic tape (yay fer cloth tape)... remember the nasty throwing x-s at GBs that Azrael & I were using... they're damned effective... as for their bigger cousins, I am still trying to come up with a gewd & effective idea for them.Belkar (OOTS) "Dude, you order paladins to clean the litter box.
