equipment materials - 2005/02/17 08:18so i'm wondering where to get quality (inexpensive) materials for weapons, armor, shields, etc. where does everyone go to get cheap golf club shafts? which ones are the best? where can i get leather at a reasonable price? where do you guys get that awesome white plank foam that you use for shields? what types of noodle work the best? how do i make a 10' polearm that doesn't weigh 10lbs? where can i get better garb?
you know the usual stuff that every one wants to know just starting out. if you've got an answer to one of the questions above, throw it out there, let everyone know about it.

Re:equipment materials - 2005/02/17 08:18Most Garb is made by people in the club, I suggest finding someone with really good garb and asking if they can teach you how to make it. Or, if they are willing to be hired to make you good garb.
I can't help you with the foam. Sorry."Life is a series of unplanned accidents, largely because no one asked my opinion. Me, I would rather it be a series of planned accidents, and I can think of a few people that I would like to plan some for." --Walter Slovosky--

Re:equipment materials - 2005/02/17 08:18 I understand that garb is made by people in the club, thank you. your input was useful and to the point.
i guess what i really was looking for was for people to give pointers on how they did stuff, offer help or services for a fee, or point people in the direction of retailers and wholesalers where they can get materails.

1) Your dripping remarks of sarcasm are not necessary in this forum.
2) Ask a more succinct question, instead of a broad, open-ended question that could be taken many different ways.
That said, here's my advice to actually answer your question:
-For Golf Club shafts, check all of the local golf shops in your area. Get to know them. Explain what you're doing, and keep in contact with them. They will probably either be jerks and tell you to buzz off, or actually help you, and keep broken shafts that they get for you. By the third or fourth time, they won't even ask what you need them for, they'll just point you to the trashcan in the back with all the shafts in them. The best types of shafts to use are the graphite shafts. The steel shafts used on many irons won't work. Broken Driver shafts are the way to go...
-Leather isn't quite as easy, as your choices are somewhat limited, usually. If you keep your eyes open for sales, you can usually pick up some good stuff pretty cheap. Check Tandy and the leather factory online.
-Check with Sir Jhonus on the Plank foam. I think that he has been in contact with the supplier, and has been distributing most of the plank foam about the IM as of late.
-For the noodle, don't get the cheap knockoff stuff. The funnoodle brand is the best. The other stuff is too squishy and breaks down to fast. Stock up in the summer. I always try to keep my bin about full of some uncored, and mostly cored noodle. Buy it in bulk at the end of the summer when it's on clearance from your local Walmart, Target, etc.
-A 10' pole would probably be best made out of Bamboo. Bamboo can be kind of hard to find at times. Luckily, here in Metro Denver, we can get some from McGuckins in Boulder. They've got just a bunch of wierd things there. I'm not sure where you would get some in your neck of the woods, but check around with the locals. If you cannot find any in your area, check with people at interkingdom events. A lot of the time, people will buy those kinds of random things from other amtgarders at big events, because they're hard to get locally. As far as making it not weigh 10 lbs, try lighter materials, and less tape, and a very lightweight cover. With courtesy padding made of pipe insulation, monster noodle, a lightweight cover, and a limited amount of tape, you should be able to shave ounces off your overall weight.
-Some pointers on Garbing:
-For applique-ing emblems onto tunics, or if you're creating a wider trim on the arms/bottom, use wonderunder. It makes things amazingly easy, and they look 100x better.
-Don't use cheap thread. And don't use foily thread. They're both not worth the trouble they'll cause you in the end.
-As far as materials, I'd say that about 65-80% of the tunics in IM proper are made from Trigger. It is a tough, durable material that's realtively easy to sew. It costs 5$/yd or more, but it's worth it if you want a tunic that's going to last. The other major downfall of trigger is that it's not availible in a lot of colors, so your selection might be a little bit hampered. I've found that Hancock fabrics usually has a bit more color selection, but they're usually a bit more expensive too. If you're looking for black, maroon, navy, royal blue, or white, check walmart. They've usually got trigger, but only in a few colors.
-If you're looking for a circle tunic pattern to use, the easiest way to do it, is to find someone with one, and borrow it. Trace your pattern off that, and then go to town. You may need to make minor adjustments to fit your body (ie- headhole size, chest size, etc), but the general pattern should be the same. Make sure to reinforce your armpits many times, or they'll be the first to tear. Leave room there for movement.
I hope this has been a little more helpful for you. If you have any questions, feel free to ask. Chances are if I don't know, someone else on this board may be able to point you in the right direction.Count Orlando Sheriff of Obsidian Hills Kingdom of the Rising Winds

Re:equipment materials - 2005/02/17 08:18As far as garb goes:
It's better if it's made for you. Purchasing ready to wear garb generally gets you garb that costs a lot more than if you'd had a local seamster make it, as well as less likely to fit well.
Garb can be made however you want it. You do get what you pay for. While you can often find great fabrics and such on sale, it takes time and dedication to find those sales, and money to scoop up the stuff when it's available, rather than when you really need it.
Knowing what you want - having a picture, a drawing, a photo, what have you always helps.
Most garb is relatively easy to make. Most groups have at least one sewing machine. I know for a fact that there is a member in your future principality *fingers crossed* that is willing to come to your shire and spend a day showing folks how to sew.
Are you talkin' bout that foam that's like insulation only thicker? I think closer to home Oderic had a line on that stuff.

Re:equipment materials - 2005/02/17 08:18Leather - first off, go fin someone who owns a lot of cows... a LOT, they may not notice one or two missing.
Garb - find someone who has garb you like, then coax them into a dark alley. If anyone asks about the blodstains, tell them it's part of the effect you're trying to make.

Re:equipment materials - 2005/02/17 08:18Yes, but it's... uh... off limits right now due to house-cleaning operations. Yeah.
And no, you probably don't want to try to make that in there anyway.
Very stinky. Headaches, nausea, blurry vision, possible infection, the works. I like to save that kind of exposure treatment for my "special" friends... when they come to visit, you know. Not a proper facility for regular (or irregular, depending on your current diet) Evil Minion use.
I'll check around and see if any of my Contacts might have something available. For a small fee, of course... all negotiable, though, I'm sure.

Re:equipment materials - 2005/02/17 08:18to start of with, I do appologize for the earlier sarcasm, i had a bad nite and was in a particulary fiesty mood ... once again my appologies Kayden & Orlando both.
i guess the point i was trying to get across was: since this thread is for newbies, let's just have people throw stuff out. for instants: i get my golf club shafts here; or if you want some awesome chain patterns try here (http://derakon.chainmailstore.com); if you wanna know how to fight check here (stickjock.com (i loved the vid of Lief&Guy)).
still, personally if anyone knows anyone that's willing to make garb on comission, i need some basic fighting garb that can take a serious beating (I even blew out a pair of jeans on a lunge fighting last week).
i just wanted anyone who needed stuff to be able to have a reference already...

Re:equipment materials - 2005/02/17 10:21I'm always willing to make garb on commission. However:
I work at a snails pace sometimes - I work quicker when I get money up front.
I hate shipping garb. I like to be able to see the person rather than work from measurements. I like to do a fitting on the person who'll be wearing the garb.
You buy the fabric - I can't promise for quality of garb. I've been burned many times from people picking out fabrics that might look interesting but ended up being crappy synthetics that did not last or wear or wash well.
I buy the fabric - I can't promise you'll love the garb. You might have a different idea in mind.
WE go somewhere and buy the fabric, then usually that works out best.
I'd rather train a new garber to learn how to make their own garb than profit from the making of garb for folks. I've worked with folks over webcam to show them how to do stuff and it's been a success.
I charge minimum 15 bucks an hour for garbing. I charge nothing for teaching garbing.
Sewing is like anything else in life - it's as hard as you let it be. Time effort and a willing eagerness to learn, and anyone can make great garb.
