"Build a Newbie!" Tournament [May-June] - 2012/01/11 04:34 Newbies are awesome. I'm a firm believer that we need about fifty of them at every park in the Empire. Sure, they don't know what they're doing, they're awkward, they can't fight to save their lives, and their garb is occasionally stapled together. But the really great newbies have a passion burning just behind their eyes that I will never stop admiring. They want to learn everything there is to know, to see all that can be seen...

...wait, I'm sorry, that's the Lion King. The point is, our newbies deserve a little bit of awesome for being there. Otherwise there'd be three of us.

In light of that, I'll be hosting a 'Build a Newbie' tournament during the last two months of my reign. Here's how it boils down:

First, find yourself a newbie. I'm sure there's a few around somewhere. Bonus points if you bring a completely new person out.
Second, gather yourself a team of 'teachers'. Warriors, artisans, garbers, singers, and such. You're limited to three teachers per 'team', so choose wisely.
Third, once the last chunk of the reign begins, teams will be competing to turn their newbie into a badass Amtgarder. Teach your newbie how to high-cross. Have them learn a dirty sea shanty. Outfit them with proper garb, safe weaponry, maybe some sexy armor, too.
Then, either just before Rakis, or most likely at the event itself, we'll throw the newbies together in a tournament, and watch them fight it out for glory!

The winning team (determined by a carefully crafted panel of judges, see above) will be the one that provides the best garb, training in fighting, and so forth, and will likely get awards showered on them like rain.
Also, you've just made a newbie's goddamn year.

Check your swords, oil your sewing machines, and put your teaching hats on, folks.

Re:"Build a Newbie!" Tournament [May-June] - 2012/01/11 09:24 I need a newbie who wants to build a guitar/violin/dulcimer/Irish Bouzouki, learn from a warlord, and absorb all of Casca's sewing know-how.

Any takers...?

Okay, then... Lesson One. This is a needle:

The bit at the bottom is the pointy end. You stick it in your enemies. All fabric is your enemy. You sew to spite your enemies. Spite is stronger than love or enjoyment. Let it drive you and you will create greatness because when the love of making stuff runs out, when your weak, arthritic hands fail you, your spite will stubbornly drive you to continue well beyond the limitations of good sense.

...How sad is it that I'm not really kidding either.

Re: - 2012/01/16 02:14 To be honest, my schedule is about to take one in the pooper and I have no idea when I will be able to do anything with any regularity. It would be unfair of me to take on any responsibilities at this time that I am unsure I will be able to follow through with.

...Plus, it seems I've already been suckered into being a judge/reeve for it. Husband-unit called dibs.

Re: - 2012/01/16 04:16 apparently I am no longer a nub according to our emperor, so I will have to bow out of the tournament :|

Re: - 2012/01/16 07:23 Casca's judging? I got this shit on lock. Is Bri still a newbie? If so, I may have to call dibs on her....again... Kung Fu is about the cultivation of the spirit.

Re: - 2012/01/20 18:06 Newbies will be considered on a case by case basis. What 'defines' a newbie can be a bit vague, given individual participation over time, the problem of "I've been in for years, but only once every three months" or "I've never made X, ever, despite my time in the game".

So, yeah, got a newbie whose been in longer than a year, but either is sorely lacking in credits, or has one sword to their name? We can make some exceptions. So long as we don't make a newbie fifteen neat cool things and turn them into a promising warlord, and then we never see them again.
