Questions about Bows and Arrows - 2011/06/27 23:06 1. how many pounds can they be?
2. what classes are allowed to use bows?
3. what kind of arrow shafts must be used?
4. can crossbows be used, and if so which kind is recommended?

I do have an avalon arrow guide that the Sheriff of Artus Pass, Emerald Hills sent me, so I'm aware of the rules on arrow tips, I just cant recall if there were specific rules about the shaft and how many pounds it can be.

also, is there a way to test the poundage of the bow, as I plan on making a primitive bow to fit my character more.

Re:Questions about Bows and Arrows - 2011/06/27 23:47 Bows are limited to 35# at 28".

Archers, Scouts, Assassins, Barbarians, and Druids can all use bows eventually.

All arrow shafts are legal, but wooden shafts must be taped along the length to prevent splintering. Wood breaks easily and aluminum gets bent easily. Carbon fiber arrows are definitely the way to go.

Crossbows are legal, but are limited to 450 inch-pounds. I've seen the most success with crossbows that were either larger and homemade, or the cheaper plastic pistol crossbows.

You can test a bow's draw weight by using a cheap fish scale (Big 5 or Walmart should have them) to draw the bow to 28" and checking the measurement.

I would recommend that you wait until you can check out some arrows on the field and talk to their creator before attempting to make your own arrows. They generally take a decent amount of time and effort and are easy to build unsafely.

Re:Questions about Bows and Arrows - 2011/06/28 21:44 Alright, thanks.

Which classes start off using bows? I see that barbarian says all weapons and archer says longbow at level one, while scout is like way down the line. I'd prefer to start as one that just begins with a bow. (P.S. at artus pass I was just a fighter, you know, getting used to the rules and stuff and yes, I have talked to archers and others who have bows and asked how they make their arrows and they all gave me good advice. The sheriff of the event sent me a link to a really detailed arrow making process and told me that before I begin using the arrows I need to make a sample arrow with part of the foam cut out so the judges could inspect it to see if it's alright.)

Also, does this amtgard allow latex weapons or was it a universal thing where they have to be so many inches in radius, etc.?

Re:Questions about Bows and Arrows - 2011/06/29 04:49 I would recommend taking a look through the rule book since it'll answer most of your questions. http://www.amtgardinc.com/bldocs/amt7.6.pdf

Archers and Scouts can both use bows from level 1. The Longbow thing you see later on for scouts is a class trait that makes their arrows do extra damage to armor.

Amtgard does not allow fully latex weapons, though players have recently been making weapons that have latex-like decoration on the non-striking portions of their weapons. As long as it meets the minimum size and padding requirements listed in the rule book, and has cloth on the striking surfaces, it's generally acceptable.
