Brand new guy seeking answers - 2011/05/07 06:28 Hello there, everybody! I am very interested in playing, but I have a couple of questions first.

Firstly, where is the group in Denver meeting for practices? I'll be coming from Lakewood, if there are numerous practices to choose from. What time is the practice, and what day? What do I need to bring with me for my first time? I have a sword I made off of some directions on the internet for an Amtgard sword, but I don't have much in the way of garb. Still working on that aspect.

Secondly, I am really considering playing a Bard, because I've always thought Bards were awesome. However, I can't seem to get my mind around the class. Can anyone give me a basic over view of their usefulness in battle? Like, are they good or bad, why, and their overall play style?

And finally, what other things do you guys do besides practices? Are there ever themed games or anything of that nature, or camp outs or things like that, or is it pretty much suit up and fight and go home?

Thanks, and I really look forward to reading your responses!

Andy.

Re:Brand new guy seeking answers - 2011/05/07 13:38 Hey, Andy.

The Denver group meets at City Park, west of the tennis courts. The group should be pretty easy to spot.

http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&hl=en&msa=0&ll=39.748031,-104.951577&spn=0.015822,0.033023&t=h&z=16&msid=202900472428627876203.0004a2aeac594586c3ef8

We try to show up between 1:00 and 1:30 and we play every Saturday. Come on out today. All you need to bring is yourself (and a parent to sign a waiver if you're under 18). Go ahead and bring your sword, but we've also got plenty of loaner equipment. Garb isn't required for your first few times out.

The way Amtgard works, classes aren't used for every game and you have the ability to change classes between games as often as you like. Once you come out to the park and get a better idea of how things work, we'll have an easier time explaining the pros and cons of each class to you.

Our standard meetings consist of Ditching (a classless warm up game that is purely melee combat), and then one or more battlegames that could be Capture the Flag, Deathball, King of the Hill, Boat Battles, or anything else we come up with for the day. Sometimes we have special events like fighting tournaments and arts & sciences competitions or quests. Quests are generally longer, more involved, battlegames where roleplaying is encouraged. One is coming up on May 21st.

There are also camp outs all over the country hosted by various Amtgard chapters. This group runs Rakis every year, which is currently scheduled for June 15-19 in Trinidad, CO.

Hopefully we'll see you out at the park today. Ask for Grix or Kord when you arrive.
