Re:Day Trip Fee??? - 2010/06/03 12:57When I asked back in Jan or Feb I was told no...for the 7th year in a row. I gave a lot of reasons why there should be one.....people like me who cannot stay and would only visit a couple of hours without eating or participating, promotion of Amtgard as a whole as it is the biggest event of the year, and various other reasons, helping to recruit new members since some of the parks don't do the quests and other things very often and to allow those without the time and money to come without breaking the bank. It costs a lot to drive up and back as it is so $25.00 for a few hours on top of that is too much.
I was told it would be checked on and someone would get back to me but haven't heard a peep since.
Storm and I had a couple of people offer to pay the full fee for us but we refused as it just doesn't seem right to have to pay that much for a few hours.
So this makes 7 years or more that I will not come visit as it just costs tooo much. 6 years of the same conversation with whoever is running Rakis. I so love to see the arts and sciences entries too! They are spectacular! Least they were the one year I did visit.

Re:Day Trip Fee??? - 2010/06/03 16:40esam is a hive of scum and villany. unfortunately, it's the common hive of scum and villany for amtgard, so most information goes through there.
part of the day trip/no day trip thing is, coming from a person that has run Arrakis, when you advertise, say, $10 for a day trip fee, then you'll get a lot of people who will look at it and say "hmm.. 25 for a couple days, or, just show up and fight saturday, attend court, see if anything cool happens, and drive home, score"
unfortunately, for Rakis to cover it's own costs, we can't afford to have a lot of day trippers. the event gets paid for by full event cost payers. it's usually best to contact the person running it and say "hey, I'm not looking to advertise that I paid a day trip fee, I just can't make it the whole time, can you help me out?"
when it gets posted every year online or on the forum "What's the Day Trip fee?" then the first thing the autocrat usually does is cringe. fuck. now you're gonna have a bunch of people say "oh, what's this? a day trip fee? I can get in for cheaper?" and it basically hurts the event.
I know, I know, it sucks to be like "oh, so I have to ask the right person the right question, in the right way, what the fuck?"
but hey, hopefully my post can help educate. note, I do not speak for any Rakis autocrat past present or future, only for myself

Re:Day Trip Fee??? - 2010/06/03 17:03I may not have asked every rakis autocrat but that is who I have asked about it....or Storm has for me. This is the first year I have said anything on the forum regarding this.
If Amtgard is doing so well as to have enough people coming for the whole time that my 10.00 donation for a day trip, as well as others lost by people with the same thinking as me, then fine.
To me is is like a garage sale....you can ask 5.00 for a pair or pants but if no one buys them you get nothing, or you can take the 1.00 someone offers and be 1.00 ahead of nothing.
Realistically, if someone decided they only want to day trip for a day or two, you get 10.00-20.00 instead of nothing. If they want to come for more than 2 days, they should be smart enough to pay the 25.00. Who knows how many might come for a day and decide to come back for the rest of it?
So I wonder how many day trip fees rakis has lost out on......count me in for a total of $70.00 in seven years.
I know from talking about this with Storm over the years, the concern is that the best day would be the highest day for day trippers but seems to me, you could make it a higher fee for Sat than the other days. That would cover the costs of court and feast better and give the option to those who want to come just for that.

Re:Day Trip Fee??? - 2010/06/03 18:48In general, Grendel is correct. Due to the slim budget we have to work with in most cases, it is difficult to justify doing a single day trip fee, due to a number of factors. A, if people realize they do not have to pay full price to come, more people will be inclined to show up for only a day, which decreases the overall gate sales. For every one person we get through the door who wouldn't have come otherwise, we probably have at least one other person who decides to only come for the one day whowould have otherwise paid full price, which ends up in a minimum $5 decrease in door receipts. Considering that the cost of the event is more or less a set figure (only adjustable due to costs associated with food), so we need to be able to ensure that we are meeting to cost, and adding a variable method of calculating funds coming in the door makes that much more difficult.
However, after conversations with other members of the crat team, we have decided this year to implement a day trip fee of $10, and see how it ends up working out. Some other receipts have ended up bringing in more money than anticipated, so we are going to give this a shot. If you do not plan on camping, and are only coming up for the daytime, then the day-trip fee applies. This allows access to all festivities of the event, including feast and court.Kord

Re:Day Trip Fee??? - 2010/06/04 04:07Well, it’s nice to see this as an option this year. If done in the future I suggest a higher fee for Sat only such as $15 due to higher costs main event etc. It’s also nice to finally have an answer on this subject. I just wish the answer had come earlier when Dreamkatcher asked in Jan-Feb when I still had the option to take the time off to go for a few nights and for Dream to daytrip up during that time. (yes, I was hoping to come for part of it –at full price- if she could day trip in the middle of that time) But now is to late. (mumbles some crap that won’t server any positive purpose on here.)
Anywho, I hope you have a successful and more importantly FUN event this year.
