Re:Tavern menu pre-quiz - 2009/04/09 19:07 Yeah, I have a feeling there will be a lot of cinnamon to sweep up Sunday morning.

Now I love cinnamon, so that makes it easier.

As always, my goal is food that is cheap enough that we don't go too far into the red ta feed y'all, and good enough that no one is hungry if they got a couple bucks.

And yeah fresh cinnamon rolls each morning with frosting and suchlike.

also, the spice was said to taste and smell of cinnamon. so cinnamon toast, cinnamon drinks (horchata) etc.. anything with a cinnamon option would be cool. The books also said that it tasted different every time starting with cinnamon for Paul and his mother. So expasion is possible (allspice, nutmeg, ginger, etc.)

i'd munch camel in a heartbeat. just looking at it made me hungry.

goat eyes on the other hand... i think i might avoid those.

as for rodents....
i'd suggest that one avoids possum (technically a marsupial, but its rodent like). that was hands down the nastiest looking carcass i've ever seen, and the smell while cooking was indescribable. flat out nasty. didn't even consider trying it after that. just buried it in the garden.

squirrel is awesome, though tough. grilled its easy enough to gnaw at, but its best boiled in a soup.

rabbit (also not a rodent) is super nummy. grilled, pan fried, soup, you name it.

beaver is super moist and frikkin awesome. grill it with various herb seasonings.

havn't tried prairie dog or guinea pig, but i hear both are good if roasted.
I thought that Rewth, with his special brand of humor, would have prefered rooster to beaver munchin'.

Re:Tavern menu pre-quiz - 2009/04/10 14:53 if i were being humorous, perhaps. but i was being serious. of all the rodents (and similar like creatures) i have nommed, beaver was the best.

back on track.... most folks favorite food is a dish of some form. mine is cinnamon. i frikkin love it. the smell, the flavor. is teh awesomes. though as i had the giggly pleasure of watching kayden learn... you don't wanna try to eat a whole spoonful at once. funny shit.

ok... no really... i swear this is on track.

there is a cuban dish called Picadillo that is particularly full of noms. its basically: ground beef, stewed tomatos, onion, green olives and raisins and served over rice or quinoa. (for those of you that havn't tried quinoa i also highly suggest it)

if the combo of ground beef, olives and raisin doesn't make people question it... it is spiced with cumin and cinnamon. and its damn delicious. i made a bunch of it for sindari and loptr when they came out a while back... and some fried plantains... omg it was yummy. the tomatoes are tangy, the olices salty, the raisins sweet and almost caramel like and then the cinnamon n cumin add this earthy and warm spice to it that binds it all together.

the best part is that its pretty easy to make in bulk and serves up quite similar to a stir fry or the other fare that has been at the rakis tavern recently.

a recipe....

i'd bump the cinnamon a bit, skip the capers, and add a splash of white or apple cider vinegar to make the flavors pop (prolly why the capers are there)
