Tavern menu pre-quiz - 2009/03/25 23:34I'll admit, I'm not sure what's a good "Dune" menu. They don't talk about food too much.
So - any ideas? Any requests? (I'm sick of doing fried rice, btw.)

Re:Tavern menu pre-quiz - 2009/03/26 04:19I demand food thats spiced enough that it doubles as paint remover.
But being serious, its a desert planet. What comes to mind is small game that would be sun baked, dried, or raw.Water being so scarce they wouldn't waste it with cooking and potentially boiling off some of the water. And smoking wouldn't be practical as wood would also be scarce. They may have also fermented meat, but since water or whey would be needed, it seems unlikely. Baked seems to be the better choice. And it doesn't help that Arrakis doesn't have much vegetation.

Re:Tavern menu pre-quiz - 2009/03/28 18:16I'm going with a Moroccan, Indian, and Middle-Eastern inspired menu for the feasts considering the names used in the novels and the desert climate. Hopes this helps give you ideas Cio Cio.Casca Eruoy

Chai tea!
Also, goat and camel are both traditional arabic foods, but I doubt that anyone can get their hands on Camel. Rodent (read rabbit or others) are desert living creatures. -Kupe

Re:Tavern menu pre-quiz - 2009/03/31 19:10Personally I'd rather eat the whole goat, eyes and all before I would even try the camel. Re:Tavern menu pre-quiz - 2009/04/01 19:15i'd munch camel in a heartbeat. just looking at it made me hungry.
goat eyes on the other hand... i think i might avoid those.
as for rodents.... i'd suggest that one avoids possum (technically a marsupial, but its rodent like). that was hands down the nastiest looking carcass i've ever seen, and the smell while cooking was indescribable. flat out nasty. didn't even consider trying it after that. just buried it in the garden.
squirrel is awesome, though tough. grilled its easy enough to gnaw at, but its best boiled in a soup.
rabbit (also not a rodent) is super nummy. grilled, pan fried, soup, you name it.
beaver is super moist and frikkin awesome. grill it with various herb seasonings.
havn't tried prairie dog or guinea pig, but i hear both are good if roasted."But right now I'm a little concerned about my pants, since I don't know where they are." - Valathina Nailo

Re:Tavern menu pre-quiz - 2009/04/02 04:22I got to try guinea pig once. A college friend of mine, her family was Peruvian and Colombian. It was damn tasty. Faintly like roasted pork... Very moist. The skin was excellent.Casca Eruoy
