Survey For the Populace - 2009/03/09 23:05Grendel and I had a long drawn out discussion about Amtgarders lack of enthusiasm for the game recently. I understand that people change over the years and that real life comes first. Several BEAUTIFUL days over the last several months have only drawn limited numbers to the park and I continue asking myself WHY? WTF is going on here? So I would like to ask all of you to publicly (or privately) answer these questions. Perhaps everyone has a commonality related to likes or dislikes that we might be able to overcome.
These are some questions I would like everyone to take several minutes answering. Consider it a bonding experience Even if you don't post them, at least answer these questions to yourself
Keep in mind, that People should not name any names. If you are writing about your least favorite moment please don't make it public that you hate/dislike someone (Ex: "so and so" uses a pole every weekend and they always leg you, etc.) Keep this friendly guys.

Re:Survey For the Populace - 2009/03/09 23:201. Showing up in a bathrobe to play a druid in California and everyone laughed at me. Before I knew the rules I saw that they had a large variety of weapons to choose from so my first battle game consisted of me playing a druid, using a bow, small shield and casting 10 points of magic 2. 7 years (March 22, 2002) 3. Ditching at Saltwars 2 years ago when the dag fighters shot a bunch of arrows onto our field and came out of the castle ready to battle. The only 2 people i remember surviving that first engagement was Kord and Myself. It was epic! 4. The battlegame at Saltwars last year where not only I got cheated, but the enemy team got cheated because a Reeve was not wearing her sash. I was "confused" so i started attack every nearby object ( my team) i killed close to 10 people and started chasing more but as I ran away to kill more I got stopped because i apparently hit a reeve without a Sash and she called me dead and everyone i killed alive. I said I only hit her once and that i was roleplaying and that she needed to relax. She took away another life for arguing. I gave her the finger and quit... 5. Too many to count... My favorite of which are my sense of humor and the ability to "professionally" express my creativity through building/making stuff 6. Fighting and seeing old friends. Having played for awhile now i enjoy spending time with everyone i have made friends with over the years 7. Not really, I would like to learn how to use a sling someday though 8. Salt Wars, The people are friendly and the fighting is INTENSE. Plus i love camping! 9. What this game has to offer. I can honestly say that I would NOT be the same person if i did not start this game when i did. 10. The fact that we have a reputation from the public as Dorks and that This is a stupid game only for nerds. Most of us are nerds, but I hate introducing it and people immediately go "dude... your a dork." 11. Games with a simple goal (militia capture the flag, etc.) through my experience when you add too much "stuff" to the equation, things start to unbalance and people stop having fun. 12. Most quests and battle games 13. Hell Fuckin No 14. I know it takes awhile to answer these questions, but please do so, you might learn something about yourself and perhaps be inspired to start inspiring others Cruz Hús Vetra Skald "Sand is over rated, it is just a bunch of tiny rocks..." Re:Survey For the Populace - 2009/03/10 05:551. What is your first memory of Amtgard? First significant memory that sticks out at me is the Imperial Midreign two Septembers ago. It was about 6 weeks from when I started Amtgard. A lot that went on there has mostly motivated me to be who I am in this game.
2. How long have you been playing? 1 1/2 years.
3. What is your happiest memory that you will never forget in Amtgard? a. Throwing caution into the wind and going to Utah with some people who I didn't exactly know.
b. This past Imperial Mid-reign. Possibly because of the odd occurrence of the lack of a ditch field. And that it was still a blast despite of it. (I mean seriously its straight of of the Twilight Zone).
4. What is your worst memory that you will never forget in Amtgard? I've had a couple of times where I've received an award or done something and have gotten "buyer's remorse" because of it. And instead of letting something be what it is. I have gotten paranoid and apprehensive as to how other people would take it.
5. What skills have you gained both (Sciences? Social? etc.) My social skills are a work in progress. But are getting better because of this game. Real life application is that because of this game I interview for jobs a lot stronger than I used to.
6. What do you look forward to most during your parks Amtgard days?
As of right now...it's the fighting. Doesn't matter who I'm hitting... as long as I'm hitting someone.
7. Is there anything you would like to learn (Amtgard related) but never did?
I'm the type of person who wants to learn everything or at least to a point (for instance I just solved the Rubik's cube and know how to do it on a regular basis)
THE top 2 on my list of things I want to learn though are Archery and more Armoring (be it leather or metal) however a lack of funds sort of puts that to the wayside as of now.
8. What is your favorite event and why? Not enough events under my belt to identify with one and go "that one" however, I'd probably say any event where I can hang out with good friends.
9. What do you like most about Amtgard as a whole? Possibly that it's a social network in of itself with like minded people.
10. What do you dislike most about Amtgard as a whole? Too much complaining about those who have volunteered who have taken charge. Too much complaining about how the game is changing and it is unrecognizable to how it was when they joined...
11. What are your favorite game types? A Proportionally sized battlefield comparative the amount of people in the game. Good reeves.
12. What are your least favorite game types? The exact opposite of that ^^^^
13. Do you ever regret starting this game? Nope, too much good has come out of it for me to regret it.
14. Anything else you would like to add This would be good to drop on to our yahoo groups...

Re:Survey For the Populace - 2009/03/10 21:361. What is your first memory of Amtgard? Thus far, it would have to be Darkmoon whooping the snot out of the Kurato. 2. How long have you been playing? About 9 years 3. What is your happiest memory that you will never forget in Amtgard? Fireballing Axgar from 70 ft. away. 4. What is your worst memory that you will never forget in Amtgard? Probably all of the fighting that goes on. Too many stupid, pointless arguements. 5. What skills have you gained both (Sciences? Social? etc.) I've learned a lot. I can sew now, for one. I've also learned alot abot leadership. 6. What do you look forward to most during your parks Amtgard days? Right now, with my group still being in the forming process, it's having them. 7. Is there anything you would like to learn (Amtgard related) but never did? Armorsmithing, Brewing. How to fight... 8. What is your favorite event and why? It's the only one I've ever attended, but Rakis. It's always different, and always fun. And It gives lots of oppurtunities to meet new people. (And kill them!) 9. What do you like most about Amtgard as a whole? As a whole, the comradere, The adventure, and the sense of belonging. 10. What do you dislike most about Amtgard as a whole? Once again, the fighting about pointless stuff, and the cliques. 11. What are your favorite game types? Any battlegame 12. What are your least favorite game types? There isn't one. When I'm out, it's to play and have fun. Not to complain. 13. Do you ever regret starting this game? Never. 14. Anything else you would like to add Nothing to add Take this sign into your heart and be brave Let it lead you to your glory or your grave

Not being able to get out everyweek. 11. What are your favorite game types? I liked the meat grinder game. Or defend the castle. 12. What are your least favorite game types? Ring the bell. 13. Re:Survey For the Populace - 2009/03/11 14:531. What is your first memory of Amtgard? throwing a javelin at a guy trying to rez a barbarian, with his whole team protecting him, and nailing him in the face, and being all happy like "this is my first day and I totally killed that dude everyone was trying to protect!" and then being upset when he just kept going and didn't take it, then someone explained to me that head shots don't count.
2. How long have you been playing? 12 years
3. What is your happiest memory that you will never forget in Amtgard? too numerous to nail it down to one, mainly hanging out with folks, fighting in cool battles, shenanigans, after park dinners/parties, etc.
4. What is your worst memory that you will never forget in Amtgard? playing the head zombie at rakis a couple years ago
5. What skills have you gained both (Sciences? Social? etc.) I can make foam weapons, sew, applique, drafting skills I picked up making an award, martial arts skills, social skills, etc
6. What do you look forward to most during your parks Amtgard days? a good fight
7. Is there anything you would like to learn (Amtgard related) but never did? not really, if I want to learn something I go do it.
8. What is your favorite event and why? NH stock events, no pressure, easy going, relaxing with friends, etc.
9. What do you like most about Amtgard as a whole? there is something for everyone. if you are new there are people you can learn stuff from, if you like to make things, or hang out, or fight, etc, everything is there. if you like to help people you can mentor folks or do service etc. I like that it takes many kids who don't have anything else and gives them something to do and grow in.
10. What do you dislike most about Amtgard as a whole? the cliquishness that can grow, the fights that people get into/the separation of friends over small things.. I guess the things that are just a part of people. the negative side of being human, but being imperfect isn't a bad thing, just something that can hurt ourselves and others if left unchecked.
11. What are your favorite game types? well balanced easy to play and understand games, ditch, militia, non standard battlegames and other games.
12. What are your least favorite game types? confusing games or excessively complex games or games that require lots of holds.
13. Do you ever regret starting this game? no

Re:Survey For the Populace - 2009/03/12 03:211. Showing up at a park for my first day. It was a quest where we fought several small groups through a maze in the mark until finally facing 4 elementals and 2 EPEs. Some cool guys gave me some gear, told me about Raider and unleashed me against the masses. 2. April 2005, just under 4 years 3. Getting my Master Healer 4. Blowing out my knee on the field. 5. sewing, weapon construction, more cooking techniques, reeving and just enjoying the company of my park memebers. 6. Battlegames. Ditches are nice, but nothing beats a good smash battle. 7. I want to learn leatherworking and woodworking. Sadly work and house ownership has put these on hold. 8. Summer Trials. Few things are more exciting than fighting in a 100+ battlegame. Plus having a ton of visitors is always nice. And the food. Did I mention the food? 9. Giving the geeks of the world a physical personification of their dreams. 10. People willing to bitch about stuff and not willing to step up and fix it. 11. Full Class Battlegames 12. Poorly run Quests 13. HELL NO!!! 14. It doesn't matter if you've been playing for 6 days or 20 years. Every member of your park is responsible for the life of your park. Step up and help out. Even the smallest things can be the difference between keeping your park alive and digging the grave. While it's nice, you don't have to be at every single event ever, but you should be able to be out once a month.

4. What is your worst memory that you will never forget in Amtgard? I dont have very many bad memories that involve amtgard itself.
5. What skills have you gained both (Sciences? Social? etc.) I have gained a considerable amount of social skills, and my ability to read people has gotten sharper.

Re:Survey For the Populace - 2009/03/12 22:081. What is your first memory of Amtgard?
Getting a bunch of people into a living room to talk about a new type of game.
2. How long have you been playing?
8 years.
3. What is your happiest memory that you will never forget in Amtgard?
I don't have one single happiest memory, but a good number of very pleasant ones. Most of them involve some sort of socializing at an event or after an event. I think one or two involve the actual game of Amtgard, but that's much less than the hanging out.
4. What is your worst memory that you will never forget in Amtgard?
Even less of that. Usually some individual behaving in an inappropriate, rude or dangerous way, nothing that's really too awful or unforgiveable.
5. What skills have you gained both (Sciences? Social? etc.)
None, I came to Amtgard with Medieval skills. Any advance in my social skills has come much more through private life and work.
6. What do you look forward to most during your parks Amtgard days?
Socializing, and a little running around in costume.
7. Is there anything you would like to learn (Amtgard related) but never did?
Nope. I am working on my tailoring skills, but less for Amtgard and more for personal use. Of course anything I want to learn or do, I'll do it.
8. What is your favorite event and why?
Actually our homegrown "event" Summer Trials. Because it's fun, relatively low pressure, easy to get to, and pretty relaxing. (Rakis is 2nd tho!)
9. What do you like most about Amtgard as a whole?
The ability to be casual and goofy while still having some level of medivialism. And the face to face social interaction with other nerds. An outlet for my volunteeristic tendancies.
10. What do you dislike most about Amtgard as a whole?
The "thuggish" mentality prevalent among many Amtgarders in other parks. (we don't have thugs here, cept for my 13 year old and that's all part of the comedy act.)
11. What are your favorite game types?
Full class battle games with objectives or interesting goals
12. What are your least favorite game types?
Militia battles.
13. Do you ever regret starting this game?
Gosh, that's awful personal. I think I did a LJ rant about that at some point. But, naw, not enough to quit.
14. Anything else you would like to add
Amtgard's biggest challenge is keeping old players motivated and getting new players recruited. That's pretty much any social group's challenge. The "problems" that are part of the system only affect me as much as I let them, so they're really not a huge concern, but they are good for a rousing rant on the fallibility of human nature when I've got my ire up and made the mistake of spending too much time reading the E-sam.

10. What do you dislike most about Amtgard as a whole? Lack of people willing to learn the rules for battlegames or ignoring certain parts of Amtgard to enhance their rate of fun. The game is about two aspects athletic fighting and Class battlegames. Unfortunately the latter is constantly ignored with cries of "I'm not a Flurb I'm a ditch monkey!" But the people I hear saying this are mostly from longtime Amtgarders. Which in turn jades the younger members that look upto them.

12. What are your least favorite game types? The ones crudly thrown together and not planned out
13. Do you ever regret starting this game? Only when people don't show up for gamedays and events. Makes me wonder why I'm wasting my time.
