N00BFTW - 2008/08/04 04:25 So it appears I may be stepping up to finish off this particular reign, as our present monarch would prefer not to do so. No worries, no fault anywhere. He's overdue for a break as is, anyway, as I understand.

In any case, I'm posting this thread as a forum for suggestions for the new reign. I'm thinking the root of our present issues is lack of people, so I figure the best way to go about fixing it is simple: New people.

So, suggest some ways for new people. I'll start.

The homecoming parade is coming up rapidly, and we've had some good success with recruiting people there. I believe it'll cost us about 70 dollars or so, if I remember correctly, and we'll naturally need volunteers to run around FoCo the day of the parade. Flyers, combatants, maybe some bardicy singers in a vehicle, plus banner will do alot for us.

A workshop at the park, focused on a 'back to basics' approach. How to make a good sword. A basic t-tunic, cut right on the spot. Chainmail weaving. Handsewing. Bardic, perhaps. I may do this on an A&S day, so new people can see just what us badasses can put together when our awesome is put together.

A Raider Day, to celebrate/mourn the Raider class going out of style with the new rules changes. Themed battlegame centered on the Raider class, which I can throw together with some ease.

Bring a Newbie to Work Day - Fairly simple. bring a newbie. We can put together a newbie starter kit, of a sword and tunic.

EPICN00B Day - Anyone with less than 12 credits is level 6 in a chosen class for a day's battlegame.

SKBC 101 - If I can get some warlords out, or just some teachers, we can spend part of a game day teaching the very basics to handy newbies, beyond the 'hold it upright, don't drop it', etc.

Another possibility is 'House of Flying Flyers'. Everybody gets ten flyers, and they get to post them up in amusing locations around town. Also, we need a flyer. Also, best locales get a prize.

Scare the Warlords - Craft an original weapon out of something bizarre, creative, or downright unholy. Points for actual safety, but don't stress yourself out. Effectiveness is also optional. (I miss the cow I heard about.)

Bring a Family Member to Amtgard - Wait.. no. Paul would.

Tell a Story - Quite simple, a story telling contest, of Amtgard topic. Winner gets something cool.

That's all I have in my head for now. I'll post more later.

Re:N00BFTW - 2008/08/04 14:34 we need to foster newbies. the gap in skill is pretty great, it causes the newb to not come out if they get rocked every weekend. I'm going to start fighting off hand single sword, I'll get killed more and be less effective, this will help give more wins against me, and it'll force me to get better and work harder. we also as a group are responsible for bringing new people into our family, we are dwindled down to a select group of folks, to grow that all need to feel welcome and included, by all. this is a group effort.

I'll do my part. Who else will make a commitment to foster our park?

I think the parade is a good first step Quiet, not sure on dates but I'm down to help.
flyer contest is a good idea and I like your idea on having folks spread out 10 of their own, really hits different areas and markets.

Re:N00BFTW - 2008/08/04 17:57 I agree with ya Chuck, and I am in for the parade, the flyer contest is a good idea for sure.

I think once we do get a decent amount of noobs out, we need to hit them with a sapling tourny, and a mini skbc before fall ends, so that they will keep coming in winter.

Lemme know dates, ill get time off from work, and we will rock this.

Re:N00BFTW - 2008/08/06 16:38 sounds like another will need to be made. Give me the criteria and designs and I can do it.

Re:N00BFTW - 2008/08/10 07:00 Something metal is a good start.

I like those crowns, but g'lord did they crack your skull after awhile.

New idea, btw...

Create-A-Class battle. That went over very well the last few times. It was the first day I played a battlegame, in fact. It'd be an excellent 'pimp my garb' event as well, as people can put together quite a few entertaining costumes for play.

Newbs love that, I can say firsthand.

Re:N00BFTW - 2008/08/11 13:56 big thumbs up on the create a class. Michael made that really awesome. if you want to use the approach he took it's a good way to maintain balance.

this is what he wrote awhile back:

The battle game will allow people to play any home built Amtgard class they invent, find on the internet or borrow. Any class idea you can come up with is allowed as long as it isn't blatantly offensive. However, the reeve gets to decide what level you can play. For an unbalanced class that level could be as low as zero. For a well balanced class (equivalent to a standard Assassin or monk in power) players should be allowed play 4th level. Powerful classes (equivalent to standard Wizard) will play at about 2nd level. You need to write up you class to play it. Is should be written up in the format of a standard Amtgard class and must have the following information: Garb, Weapons, Armor, Shield, Level by level abilities, and special rules and restrictions. If it is a casting class it must also have a weapon points cost chart and a spell list. Any spells not on the Amtgard spell list need to have complete spell descriptions also. People who choose not to bring a non-standard class play as though it was a normal battle game. Any battle game variant may be combined with this idea.
