 Beginner Maille - 2008/06/16 22:24 I was planning on getting some tools to make a set of maille and was wondering what a good beginner inner ring diameter was, and also a good type of metal, and any other general tips would be nice

Don't know if you've got an answer yet so I'll throw one out there.
3/8ths Inside Diameter is (I believe) still the defacto size and a good one to start with as well. Anything larger than that and it starts to look so so.

As far as wire goes, your standard 16g galv steel wire is good stuff. I found it on a quarter mile spool as electrical fencing wire. Otherwise it's available in rolls of 100' at places like Ace hardware.

As far as tips go-
For my 3/8" bar, I got an aluminum one (from Ace or Home Depot) and drilled a hole in one end I can run the wire through. 3/8ths just happens to also be the largest size most of your cheap power drills can use. If you want to see my setup just lemme know.

 Re:Beginner Maille - 2008/06/17 21:15 Went out last night bought some 2x4s and rigged up the coiler...made it like 2 feet with 3/8 dowell and I got 200 feet of 16 gauge galv steel just a lucky guess good thing hehe

whoops misread post...I thought you said DONT use a drill...I am though so it shoudn't be bad.

 Re:Beginner Maille - 2008/06/25 02:50 So i went to Home Depot yesterday and bought a pair of Wiss M3 snips...tried to cut 16 guage galv steel with them and they couldn't. The snips would seperate and the coil would just rotate and get deformed. Maybe I am doing something wrong or is there a way to modify these because right now I am forced to use a pair of gardening sheers that are working surprisingly well.

I know TheRingLord.com carries them, and most home depots do. These ones are Knipex Cobolt Mini Bolt Cutters, and the better made of the brands.
