So a couple quick garb/armor questions.

So I've found multiple sites like:
http://www.badgersden.com
http://www.medievalcollectibles.com
http://www.realmcollections.com
http://www.replicadungeon.com
http://www.darkknightarmoury.com
http://www.schmitthenner.com/
and a bunch of others that I didn't quite like

I'd like to get some leather armor, but right now I'm looking at about $700 for a full getup. I was wondering:

A) Is there any place that has cheaper armor or better selection?
2) Seeing as how a scout has 3 points of armor is that 3 points for my arms, chest, legs, and any other place I have armor or is it I get hit 3 times anywhere with a 1 damage sword and my armor is bust?

Honestly, Amtgarders in general don't tend to frequent outside vendors for armor/weapons/etc. Most of the stuff you see on the fields is made by Amtgarders.

You can honestly put together a decent 3 pt. rig personally for under $200, although it would take a significant amount of time and learning to do so. That's just for the materials, however; the primary reason why the rigs you're looking at are so expensive is the labor involved. I don't personally know of any resources where you're going to be able to find much for cheaper than the ones you posted.

As far as the armor is concerned, the 3 pts. is locational; this means that if you get hit once in the arm, once in the leg, and once in the torso, you have one point missing from each of those locations (so 2 pts. left on the torso, 2 pts. on the leg that was struck, 2 pts. on the arm, 3 pts. on the limbs that were not struck, etc.)

Oh and I never heard about the use of latex swords, yay or ney?

Latex swords are not legal in Amtgard, primarily due to the size. Most of them are relatively thin and culminate in pointed edges; because of the legality of stabbing, tips have to be a certain diameter to ensure they do not cause injury if a person gets stabbed in the eye. Most of the latex swords are used in low-power partial speed LARPs, rather than full-speed games such as Amtgard.

Re:N00b in the springs - 2008/05/30 01:49 Very informative, thank you.

Is there anyone locally that makes leather armor that I could talk to/get price quotes from?I would like to stay "in house" or so to speak.

I may have just missed that about the armor in the rulebook, and that makes sense about the latex weapons.

this blanket statement isn't exactly accurate. MOST commercially available latex swords are not legal in Amtgard.

however, there are a few that can be found that will conform to our rules. i've seen a latex hammer that would have worked as well as a mace from the same manufacturer (both were at a con booth). i've also seen a greatsword that MIGHT have worked under the flatblade rules, but i'm not 100% certain.

that said, even though they might have been legal, they also would have had notable problems remaining legal. they tend to break down much faster under our level of combat. they jsut aren't a good idea to bring onto an amtgard field.

Re:N00b in the springs - 2008/05/30 04:58 oops... and now i'm gonna correct myself... kord was right. latex weapons are never legal. no cloth covers. heh i forgetted that part. "But right now I'm a little concerned about my pants, since I don't know where they are." - Valathina Nailo

Re:N00b in the springs - 2008/05/30 06:05 Well there's a number of people I know of that make good leather armor. Azrael is one of them and he does pretty good work. However I'm not sure how much time he has to devote to it. Although if he reads this he might be interested and you might also think of sending him a PM on here. Just a thought. Re:N00b in the springs - 2008/05/30 19:37 Thanks again, I guess I'm just getting impatient. I know with Rakis and the ren fair coming up I should be able to find some stuff at those places. I also need to pickup some more garb (shirts, pants, cowls, etc) are there booths setup at Rakis that I might be able to browse for things that I need? Sholto Nightseer - lvl1 Scout

Re:N00b in the springs - 2008/05/30 19:47 We do have some merchants that show up at Rakis; so far this year the only ones I am aware of are Odan (who tends to have more chainmail jewelry, socks, and other sundries) and Tandy Leather Factory (which would be providing basic components for creating most leather items, rather than finished pieces). I'm not sure if any of our garbers are planning on having a booth this year or not; Moss is the one who is heading up that area, and would have more information than I would.

And Rewth... Yes, that is another reason. Even the hammers I have seen, however, don't tend to meet the legal weapon requirements due to the size of the padding, strike legal surfaces, etc. Admittedly, my only real experience with them was Edhellen Armoury demo-ing them at Banner Wars, so I haven't looked at them terribly in depth.

Re:N00b in the springs - 2008/06/01 07:33 So I went out today, I'm sunburnt & exhausted. Totally going back next week.

So I need a list of what I need to make the following & where I might be able to find it around here:
2 short swords
1 Staff
Arrows

Re:N00b in the springs - 2008/06/01 07:43 The Swords are easy to come by... you might try calling around the used golf shops and asking them if they have any Graphite that they might be willing to depart with.

The Noodle for the swords can be found at Wal-Mart currently... I find the Blue noodle make the better swords...

You also might take a look at thrift stores for cores... sometimes in their bin of golf clubs... some people throw in some graphite there as well.

As a general question... has anyone used this place for Bamboo?

http://www.bamboofencer.com/ can anyone tell me if it is worth a damn?

Re:N00b in the springs - 2008/06/02 01:32 So I got 2 graphite sticks from Dick's, I only wonder how you're supposed to cut them (hacksaw or take it to home depot to have them cut it)

And Lokin what kind of bamboo was it I was supposed to get to make staves?

Those prices are pretty high... I've got a bunch of bamboo for sale, and I'll have most of it at Rakis. If you're looking for a specific place to get it, McGuckin Hardware in Boulder is the standard place most of us go whenever we need bamboo.

I personally use a pipe cutting tool, which you can get at Home Depot for about 5 bucks if I remember correctly. It basically is a rotating blade on a C-Clamp which you then use to cut progressively deeper into the shaft. Although you do get a bit of splintering once in a while, usually, it cuts through the shaft relatively cleanly.

Re:N00b in the springs - 2008/06/02 02:10 Kord - do you have any pieces long enough for a 7" staff? I should be making it to Rakis... When depends on if I can get wedensday off.

I know my dad has one of those cutters, I guess I'll try it on a non-esential part of the pole and see how it does. How am I supposed to seal off the end

Re:N00b in the springs - 2008/06/02 02:57 I've got everything from 7" t 14" at this point, so we can definitely find something worthwhile for you there.

As far as capping the end... There are a number of different ways to do it. Some people like to tape a penny to the end with strapping tape; this adds a bit of weight to the tip of the sword, but does help make sure that the end stays secure. Other people put some tape over the cut end, and then also tape and torque-wrap down some foam on the tip so that it can still fit (albeit snugly) into a piece of funnoodle. This tends to break down quicker, but helps to decrease the amount of tip-weight your swords may have.

Re:N00b in the springs - 2008/06/02 07:04 Ok, I heard that they were trying to get away from metal in weapons. I bought some toilet bolt covers, the look like they should fit or if I cut them down. I also got some 5' bamboo poles at walmart. I think I'll see how I do with a 5' and go up from there. I'm not great at sewing etc so what can I use to cover the weapons? Also I have a a cover for one of those rubermade tubs, would I be able to set this up as a shield as long as it doesn't exceed my classes shield size? Sholto Nightseer - lvl1 Scout
