Rakis On the Plains - 2008/06/10 18:48i'm curious for more information regarding the new poll on the front page.
has a potential site on the plains been located? if so, i'm quite interested in hearing about it. my own searching a few years back came up fruitless except for a boyscout camp that wouldn't have worked for our dates and would have forced us to be a dry site.
one option that i'd like to see heavily considered that wasn't mentionedin the poll is SHADE. i'm actually REALLY flexible as to what other amenities a site offers, but shade is a huge deal to me. out on the plains we're gonna be hotter, and my pasty ass burns hella fast and doesn't deal with heat very well at all.
anyway... infoz!"But right now I'm a little concerned about my pants, since I don't know where they are." - Valathina Nailo

Re:Rakis On the Plains - 2008/06/10 19:06Actually it was something that someone mentioned at the park recently and I threw it up there to get reactions to the idea of moving it out of the mountains. As far as I know there is no specific site or plan in mind yet. Looking for a new site is not something I have time for at the moment, but it sounds like there are several other people looking into it right now.
Shade is good. Shade is important.
I threw in the things that came to mind when people bitch about sites, it is by no means a thorough or scientific poll. Obviously.

Re:Rakis On the Plains - 2008/06/10 21:12I've been talking to Z and looking at stuff today for sites..
found something that seems promising that I'll need to research more.
I really wanted to put something together at the sand dunes but the modern amtgarder has grown too soft for primitive sites, and Rakis is too big for the sand dune campgrounds that I've seen.
this alternative appears promising, shade, group camping, bathrooms, running water, electricity, group camping, lower even level of altitude/flatter, showers, a covered permanent structure thing with big grill but no kitchen, coin-op laundry, an amphitheatre, we would probably have to use the group campground area and some non group campground areas but should be able to handle more than the average attendance last couple years. it would be about 3 miles from the highway.
still looking into fighting areas.
the difficult part about colorado is the best facilities are going to be in the mountains, people come to colorado to see mountains and trees. thus, where the people and interest is, the cost and facilities are too.
smaller camp grounds that don't cover our needs exist, for more affordable prices, but sacrifice facilities, and in most cases shade.
still investergating.

If the campground is part of the national park, then no. Never, ever ever and never. That would be a fight to the death, right there. If we never give those people our money again it will be too soon.Tal

don't worry it's not the place I'm looking at, and the place is not connected to them in anyway or any national park, etc..
btw, why 'fight to death' against that location? (I'd like to go to the sand dunes site someday outside of amt)

After they took our money then basically threw us on the side of the road for no good reason? They didn't even try to pretend be nice about it, they were total dicks about the whole thing. Screw those hippies.
EDIT: That was what, 1993? This is one grudge I'm going to lovingly cherish my whole life.

Re:Rakis On the Plains - 2008/06/11 05:08About possible sites, Hermit Park near Estes is now partially open and running. Have a bit of info on it and will bring it to Rakis. It's now a Larimer county facility. May be pricy and don't know yet if there are showers available.
PS I missed the survey thread, where is it?

Re:Rakis On the Plains - 2008/06/16 06:11I have no official plans set as of yet... but seeing how it's on my doorstep it wouldn't be too hard to get someone to give me a ride up there.
