Re:Claws - 2008/06/03 02:01 Dangit, Hoshi's last post pretty much beat me to it.. sort of..

OK, in the long history of discussion about safety and game weapons and mechanics, etc, I'm one of the first people to say "NO WAY" to such a weapon construct. AND, I still think that polearms are hands-down the most dangerous weapons on the Amtgard field, including-type punch weapons. I believe fervently that FAR more folks get hurt by Polearms than would probably ever be hurt by punch-weapons. (Not to mention, much like staves, most people aren't going to be able to use them effectively enough to compete with swords..)

However, if you deconstruct it, these "Claws" are probably not going to have much more chance of people making punching contact with their opponents than dagger-fighting (Jugging Quick vs. Quick comes to mind) does.

Therefore, I was going to say simply, that in the brief description we have, the thing actually sounds a LOT like the strap madu of Folcwine's (in design) and it behooves us to at least have Loki (or his park buddy) bring it to Rakis and we'll look it over and judge it onsite.

I was initially VERY against the strap madu of Folcwine, and have come around on that weapon; and many years ago Jetara made long "claws" that were long-sword length (I believe) that he fought with briefly, and that were arguably legal and ultimately fairly safe.

I don't know about the "Slash only" rule - in general I personally tend to say that it should be legal and SAFE if used either way, but again, I'd like to see what this looks like in person before making a judgement on it.

Re:Claws - 2008/06/03 02:10 its up to the park reeves to determine the safety of a weapon.
folcwine's strap madu was checked by no less than four reeves and all of them, including myself, passed it.
he has used it and loaned it out continuously since then (almost two years ago, now) and there hasn't been one complaint. if there were, we'd have tossed it.
the minute it gets a legitimate complaint, it's gone. but it's always dealt with on a week to week basis.
punch weapons can be made and wielded safely, but not by everyone. this is why it is safer to simple outlaw them as a general rule, and let them only see the field in controlled and experimental doses...
and truthfully, only locally, this kind of mentality doesn't fly interkingdom-like.
so build your things, if they're illegal, suck it up and try to do it better.
good-luck, buddy.
your reeves are there for a reason. use them.

Re:Claws - 2008/06/18 00:02 In addition to what Z just said punch weapons are not categoricly illegal any longer, as show to us at SW5 by kord (I believe at the time the IGMR) when we first saw Folc's Strap Madu.

Nothing in the rulebook states anything of the sort. However comon sense should apply when dealing with them on a case by case basis just as Z mentions above.

We've had a couple pairs of daggers made here in RE that are perfectly safe, as safe as any daggers, and yeah I'd rather be full on punched with them then loptrs polearm anyday of the week.
