Arrows - 2007/12/01 05:30 Since Draconis Enterprises (Avalon Arrows) closed shop I have been looking to make my own arrows because the ones I have are slowly reducing in numbers. I have found all the materials needed to make new arrows at a reasonable cost except for the shafts themselves. Since Blue Jacket shafts are no longer made does anyone know of a comperable and cost reasonable shaft to make the arrows with? The closest carbon shafts I have found are approximately the same thickness but a larger diameter and a bit pricey for me. Does anyone know what we should use now (shafts)that are reasonable in price?

Re:Arrows - 2007/12/03 19:09 honestly, good luck finding anything remotely near what Avalon could get for his shafts, I've even gone to the Easton Archery manufacturere here in Salt Lake (they are a client of mine) and tried to become a distributer of thier shafts. The closest at the time were still much more expensive then Avalon's.

This is why alot of us around here went out and bought up as much of Avalon's Blue Jacket stock as possible.

1 dozen for 30 bucks
3 dozen for 70 bucks
free shipping

still pricey when you consider what they used to go for. but its not unreasonable.

Re:Arrows - 2007/12/04 05:51 So what I'm seeing here is that unless we can find blue jacket shafts somewhere or are willing/able to spend big bucks on other shafts there is no alternative and amtgard archery is effectively dying out?

Curious, what kind of price does Easton give to their distributors for the St epic shafts?
Have also been looking at Gold Tip expedition and BlackHawk Vapor shafts but prices are also quite high for my budget without some kind of distributor price break.

Re:Arrows - 2007/12/04 14:19 amtgard archery is hardly dying out. there are still part of the amt-world that have never heard of avalon's arrows. and there are a number of folks who have designed thier own styles which many claim are superior (Oznog's Meatseeker arrows tend to be the front runner in this category).

there are plenty of alternative shafts. blue jackets just happened to be ideal given thier dimensions, strength and price point.

Re:Arrows - 2007/12/04 15:37

Umm... yeah, what Rewth said.

While Avalon's arrows were excellent (I own a few dozen myself) they were not, by any means, the only option available and Amtgard archery survived without them for many years. I used to pick up shafts at the local Gart back in the day that were a tad long but in all other respects worked perfectly. The options are out there, you just have to look for them.

Re:Arrows - 2007/12/05 05:26 Yes,,,, there are many other shafts out there that I believe would hold up but at what price? Suggestions?

Re:Arrows - 2007/12/06 07:57 Ok, so Oznog's arrows are one suggestion. Where do you find them and at what cost? And if a person is going to make their own, keeping cost in mind what is suggested for shafts?

Re:Arrows - 2007/12/06 14:28 Oznogs arrows can be found by contacting Oznog... you can find him on E-sam pretty readily or i could bounce you his email addy if you want. last i knew his arrows cost 10$ a piece.

if you make your own, i suggest sticking with the Blue Jacket Shafts you can get on ebay at 30 bucks a dozen. (roughly $2.50 a piece is still hugely better than what you'll find in garts)

Re:Arrows - 2010/03/20 07:35 I've recently constructed "Avalon Tech" arrows using all materials purchased at Wal-Mart. They are the regular diameter and a bit shorter, but work very well and relatively cheap. If you you build the arrow the way you think an "Avalon " arrow should be, chances are you'll have an above average arrow when you're done.

I too sell my arrow for 10 dollars, however, the price may go up to 12$ soon because I was one of the lucky few that came out with 5 dozen Blue Jacket #230 shafts. The problem is, none of them are finised. No fletchings, no nochs. Which is why I am posting here.

Where can I find nocks for the shafts. And any guidance on fletching them would be helpful. I was thinking about using a 1/4 inch strip of duct tape to build up the end of the shaft to fit under the bigger, outside noch and then glue it on. Comments?

Any help on this matter would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks and have a great day,

Garreth

Re:Arrows - 2010/03/21 06:44 your best bet would be an archery store near you. However there is one readily available here in Canon City that i could help with securing prices etc. for you if need be. When there is no light, there is dark;

Re:Arrows - 2010/03/22 22:52 duct tape as a buildup around your shaft will ultimately fail and will cause your nocks to pop off mid battle. not fun.

track down Beman overnocks. i know they come in at least two sizes, one of which is perfect for the bluejackets. if i can find my bag of them i'll let you know the size specifically. otherwise google the crap out of it.

Re:Arrows - 2010/07/22 22:49 Sorry for this being so out of date...

I buy simple carbon arrows from Academy. They're a little short at about 25" but they usually run $1.79 a piece.

I don't have any on me here, but if anyone is interested I can get the sku number.
