Leather Help - 2005/04/26 13:33 Yo, I'm looking for a way to get leather, thick enough to count as 2 points (3/16 yes?) for a VERY cheap price. I'm trying to make a set of armor~ full torso piece, greaves, and shin armor, along with maybe some bracers and small pauldrons.

Kayden, maybe can help me out with construction and tips and such, but this is my major project at the moment, I need help getting the leather, for as cheap as possible... 50 bucks doesn't buy much...

Re:Leather Help - 2005/04/26 13:36 sometimes you just gotta pay the price for stuff you want,

have you tried working somewhere? a paper route? mow lawns, wash dishes, etc?

if you want a decent amount of leather at that price range ($50.00) it ain't
gonna be beautiful and thick.

check out tandy leather

Re:Leather Help - 2005/04/26 13:53 yep. grendel and obie pretty much covered it. leather isn't cheap. some poor moo cow died for that armor you want to make. you shouldn't devalue its life by trying to pay less for its hide.

hehehehe hippies are funny.

but, it doesn't make it any less true.

if you go down to the leather factory warehouse in denver (off of I-70) they have a scraps bin. you cna usually find something there. but the pieces will be small, defiantely not large enough to cover a torso without piecing them together.

otherwise you might try the scrap bags at hobby lobby. i found a bunch of 6inch by 6 inch pieces in thier 4$ bags. but, tha twas 1pt leather, you'd have to stud or ring it for the second point. and it looks kinda wonky and you'll end up with 4 or 5 different colors. i made mine into goblin armor. it looks like ass... intentionally. and i may still rebuild it into something nicery.

but as a side note, for a good suit of leather armor, you are likely to spend half your specified budget (or more) on the hardware alone. rivits, buckles, studs, rings, d rings, clips, dyes etc aren't cheap either.

if i had to suggest a cheap armor, i'd suggest Cloth Brig with aluminum plates. only worth 3 points, but it will prolly only set you back round 50 bucks for the cloth, pop rivits, and some scrap aluminum sheets. and potentially will look much better.

Re:Leather Help - 2005/04/26 14:03 Well I've got this thing already laid out, rawing and such. The torso is two pieces fitted together, the mot important parts are the torso and greaves at the moment. I don't need some uber-nice leather, and the color doesn't matter as it will be getting dyed green. I might be able to scrounge up a little extr, and I may have more like 75.. depending on how much prom stuff comes to. Founder of The Black Fox Tribe

Re:Leather Help - 2005/04/26 16:15 Zios I would highly suggest that you step back and think “Do I want a start making nice piece of armor in a few weeks or months after I have saved up the money and I could do it right, or do I want a crappy suit of armor in the near future?”. To me instant gratification isn’t worth having a crappy piece of armor that I had to cut a ton of corners to do it with as little money as possible. I know money for most people your age is very tight (was for me as well back then) but that’s why its imperative to make the most of the money you have. Some times that means saving up for a bit to get what you want not the cheap substitute that you can afford. Making a good piece of armor that will last more then one battle game takes a LOT of time, its not something that can be rushed into or done quickly.

Re:Leather Help - 2005/04/26 16:44 Takezu: I didn't save up the monies for this.. my dad sent me alot more than I asked him for to get my prom stuff. However I see your point. Actually.. what I could do is pace myself while working on this armor, and just get the materials needed a bit at a time, getting just enough for 1 piece of it in the meanwhile.

Obie: Thanks man, yeah, it will be a dark green, like pine-needle green color, and I'd love any and all help once I get the ball rolling.

Re:Leather Help - 2005/04/26 21:04 side ntoe... zios... yer kinda a tiny guy. for now. i doubt yer done doing that whole puberty thing (no offence intended). it would suck to make a very spiffy suit of leather only to outgrow it a year later. Re:Leather Help - 2005/04/27 13:29 Trust me, I won't outgrow, I'm now the same size as my dad... I won't grow much more. And *sigh* yes Rewth, I've hit pueberty.. BOTH of em have dropped... a long time ago. Anywayz, I'm pretty small, and the 2.99 is a very good price for leather, it adds up but it shouldn't be more than like 20-30 for enough for the torso piece. Founder of The Black Fox Tribe

Re:Leather Help - 2005/04/27 13:32 So, I'm lookign at the veg tan leather at Tandyleather, and alot of the leathers don't say the size under the description, although mmost do say the oz. How can I tell if something is thick enough (more than 3/16) to be counted as 2 point leather? Founder of The Black Fox Tribe

Re:Leather Help - 2005/04/27 13:53 generally speaking, 1oz of leather is 1/64 of an inch thick.

4 oz leather is 1/16th....

so 12 oz leather is 3/16th.
