Staves and Red Thrusts - 2006/11/14 22:45
yet another silly explosion of rues crap on E-sam brought to light an issue i felt hte need to weigh in on in an official capacity. the issue was, can staves be used as red weapons (shield breaking) when used in a thrusting manner.
the primary argument was based around the idea that staves do bludgeon damage when thrusting. the whole thread can be found here: http://www.electricsamurai.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=154128
the clarification that i made, applicable within hte iron mountains only, and only for hte remainder of my reign is: No, thrusting staves are never red.
justification: this boils down to the rules using the same terms to describe two separate things, an action and an effect.
definition of staff: "ends may be used to thrust, but it is a bludgeon attack" ---"may be used" refers to a type of action. "bludgeon attack" refers to a type of effect and applies to resistances on monsters mostly.
definition of Red weapon: "when used to slash or bludgeon" ---"when used to" refers again to a type of action.
definition of Red weapon: "Never when used to stab or pierce." ---again, "when used to" refers to a type of action.
so... how does it boil down in regard to staves and red status? simple... staves may be used to (a type of action) to thrust. when they do so, the damage output is considered bludgeon for the purposes of resistances n what not. red weapons are only considered red when they are used to slash or bludgeon... never when they thrust. while the output of the attack is considered bludgeon, the type of attack was still a thrust. therefor they are not red when thrusting.
the word never in "Never when used to stab" also further compounds this idea. regardless of all other concepts, never means never, unless very specifically stated otherwise (see the description of magic projectile). unless the definition for staff includes such a statement, it is not an exception to the word never.
