Re:Sewing Tips : - 2005/06/09 07:17 I take it by "finish seams" you guys mean flat felling or some other way of doubling up the seam on the inside.

I seldom do any kind of french seams or such, and my stuf lasts for years with hard and heavy wear.

Cause I iron them open.

The only seams that have ripped out were under the arms or at the "doorknob catchers" on the hakama. If I'd french seamed or the like the fabric would have ripped and the clothes wouldn't have been repairable.

Re:Sewing Tips : - 2005/06/21 18:49 "Finished" generally translates to "anything to slow or stop the fraying of the fabric," even if its just running a zig-zag down the outside of the seam. A finished seam will always last longer than an unfinished seam, but how long that is depends on your fabric. Trigger will fray slowly, satin will fray while you're sewing it (in fact, I generally double my seam allowance when working with satin, and trim down as necessary )

As for applique advice, I suggest what basically amounts to sewing a piece of paper to your piece. Slide the paper in on the bottom, sew over it, tear it off. The paper stiffens the applique, and will eventually wash out.
Superstar, do you think you're what they say you are?

Re:Sewing Tips : - 2005/08/16 08:04 A tip I would like to add: Put a piece of paper under the base fabric when appliqueing. It keeps bunching down to a minimum. The paper tears off easily and any left under the stitching will come off in the first wash.

A question: how do I deal with all the little fraying threads? Do I just keep clipping them back?

Re:Sewing Tips : - 2005/08/21 20:30 You can (and should) lock-stitch over the applique, just like you would a normal stitch. Then trim the threads, and you should be good. Superstar, do you think you're what they say you are?
