Gambeson=padded/quilted armor? - 2006/07/31 20:13 Does a Gambeson become “padded/quilted armor” in areas not covered by chain, ie worth 1 pt?

Padded armor can be studded/ringed (though I personally wish this allowance were to go away) while Gambesons cannot.

Can 1 piece be both? ( I know it's played this way in most places but not sure it's supported by the rulebook).

Situation:
1-So a player has a full padded armor that covers full torso, full arms, and full legs (in skirt form).

2-He throws a set of 3pt Chain over it that covers full torso, upper arms (to about mid point on the bicep), and the butt/groin/upper thigh area.

3-He adds a set of 6pt bracers to his forearms that cover up to about 1 inch from his inner elbow.

A-Now to average his arms:

Upper arm=4pts (3pt chain + 1pt gambeson bonus)
Middle Arm=1pt (padded/quilted armor) or 0 points Gambeson
Lower arm=6pts

Total Arm Average= 3pt (using padded armor)
Or
Upper and lower arm=5pt (with a large “hole” in the middle section)

B-Now if a Gambeson in a non-chain maille’d area is considered “padded armor” and we then stud the Middle Arm area the average goes as so:

Upper arm=4pts (3pt chain + 1pt gambeson bonus)
Middle Arm=2pt (1pt padded/quilted armor + 1pt)
Lower arm=6pts

Total Arm Average=4pts

I know the best option is for him to extend the sleeves down to the top of the bracers but the question still applies to his legs. Does he consider the whole skirt padded (thus removing the Gambeson effect on the butt and groin, and consequently making the torso armor as a whole drop 1 point due to averaging sections), a Gambeson (zero armor) or both?

And yes I know that most places will consider it both, just not sure that can be supported by the rules as written.

Re:Gambeson=padded armor? - 2006/07/31 20:21 Relevant section in the rulebook (underline added):

Gambeson (sometimes referred to as an arming coat) resembles a quilted, close fitting tunic that minimally extends from the
thighs of an individual to their elbows, excluding their head and neck. If worn under any type of chain mail, the wearer will
receive a +1 bonus to the area that the chain mail covers. The gambeson may not be modified to increase this value. A
gambeson must be the equivalent of at least quilted cloth with cotton batting padding in between the layers, and must cover
the entire area of the hit location under the chain in order to grant a bonus.

Re:Gambeson=padded armor? - 2006/07/31 21:11 actually, in most cases a gameson is going to qualify as "quilted" armor as opposed to padded. but yes... a gameson when worn without the chain, is most certainly able to qualify as armor of some form. it jsut needs to conform to the requirements ofthat armor type.

also... when the rulebook says that armor is averaged across a body location, don't take that to mean equal portions. i personally consider how much of a body part the relevant piece covers.

in the case you describe above i would guess the majority of this players arm is actually that 6pt bracer if i were to see this in person and rate it i would guess something like this:
1/4 arm covered in 3pt chain +1 for gambeson
1/4 arm covered in quilted
1/2 arm covered in 6pt plate

which would give me a rating of 4.25 or 4 in the end. then apply a sanity check: "do i have a problem with someone getting 4 pts of armor for that much weight/heat/encumberance?" and the answer is no, so its all good.

this prevents someone from getting screwed by wearing plate arms except for a 2 inch cuff of leather at the end and having to average al lthe way down to 3, or even worse, prevents someoen from wearign a 1pt leather jerkin, adding a 4 x4 inch metal plate to thier chest and expecting to average it to 4. (neither are technically even close if you read other rules, but you get the point)

in the end, i prefer to break down armor on a location by percentage of surface area that piece covers on that arm.

Re:Gambeson=padded armor? - 2006/08/01 07:05 i'd rather have a stiff padded cloth or leather backing behind my maille as opposed somthing thats as i'd best describe as soft and squishy like all the quilted stuff i've run into. next arming garnment i make will be for my best friend and will be tough as nails with a canvas shell& liner with 1/2" strips of cut up rags packed into the tubes to make one tough gambison. i'd also like to make a stiff padded arming garnment for a friend but if it won't count for crap, well it'd suck i guess. Yes, hate me, hate me with all your being and let the hate flow through you!
