Quil work - 2006/07/18 19:14 Does anyone have a file on Quil working? preferably pdf, but anything will do. "Let me explain this to you once. If I kill you: You will be awake, you will be facing me, and you'll be armed."

Re:Quil work - 2006/07/18 21:04 its been about 15 years since i've done quillwork at all. i learned my my father who learned from one ofhte buckskinners bibles. unforutnately i don't remember which one. my dad was pretty big in the whole fur trade era reenactment stuff.

but a quick google search found this:

and it covers both techniques i learned (zigzag and band) as well as a few others. additionally it mentions two of the more important aspects: snip the tips, and soak in warm water beofre working.

there is NOTHING quite like not looking as you plunge your hand into a coffee can filled with porcupine quills.

the only problem now is going to be where to find quills in this day/age. we caught a procupine in our trapline one year, so that provided plenty of quills for us. "But right now I'm a little concerned about my pants, since I don't know where they are." - Valathina Nailo

Re:Quil work - 2006/07/19 14:10 my brother makes leather mocassins with quilwork (we're talking about the porcupine quils that you soak and then dye and sew into leather and fold the quils and make a cool little design with them, right?)

Have no idea if their prices are reasonable or not, don't play with porky pokies myself...
