Quivers - 2006/07/04 12:15 There are unfortunate archers, scouts, and barbars out there with a bow and no quiver fumbleing with a handful of arrows and their bow. some may have improvised some sort of cardboard and ducttape quiver. i am trying to come up with a sort of "munitions grade" quiver that can be made on the cheap. leather as a material is basicle out unless you can get a good deal on it. two of the better ideas i've had (at least i think they're good) is 3 materials: pvc pipe quiver using a 3" or 4" pipe with cap and ground to reduse snaging garb on the butt cap. "linothorax" matrerial quiver, cotton canvas can be had on the cheap from menards in the form of drop cloths. thirdly is somthing i just thought up. a venir plywood quiver curved and fixxed in position, somthing like 1/8" or 3/16" might do it.

none of these are perfect as is. the pvc quiver would probably have a bit of weight to it. the linothorax quiver could sag out of shape when wet. the wooden quiver could be a bit on the fragle side.

as for fixes the weight of pvc is sort of a lost cause i think. the linothorax quiver could be reinforced by having a wireframe sandwiched in the layers or have bands of sheet metal on the surface and or interior to hold it in shape in ceriatin points. the plywood venier quiver could have a woven cloth layer glued on the inside and outside surfaces to protect against splintering if broken and possibly also have sheetmetal banding or completely covering it in the more fragile areas.

thoughts?

Re:Quivers - 2006/07/04 13:25 actually, you might want to look into the quiver design fitz has made. i've got one myself that i would happily photograph fer you.

its made of leather, but only a remarkably small amount of it. the quiver itself is a 3inch x 18? inch "accordion" that masically creates a bunch of small slots to stuff the shafts through. the nice part is its open o nthe bottom, meaning your fletchings don't get squidged in on one another and tear each other up as you remove em. i'll take some pics when i get a chance and post em here.

Re:Quivers - 2006/07/17 21:11 I've put links in different threads on E-sam of my original quiver. I don't have the link with me here at the office but if rewth can find it on esam the link is still valid. There is also a pic of one I made for a prize at SW3 on the RE website in the populace section. In fact you can see mine attached to my armor in the war section of SW3 as well.

www.theriversend.com -> populace -> scroll down to the salt war 3 galleries (the ones with the white fabric walled castle).

Re:Quivers - 2006/07/18 06:35 Found the mockup montage of Rewths rig before I finished it:

And this is another simple version that I did as a prize for the archery tourney at SW3, the 2 frot straps and the back strap are made to slide onto the wearers belt. Some guy from Idaho that came down for his first or second weekend of amtgard one 3rd place, and since I took 1st I gave the first place prize of a hand crossbow to Rewth and he gave the 2nd place prize to the guy from idaho who took 3rd.:

The one on the right is my Monks Rig that has since then been altered to make the center Sword scabbard into 2 seperate scabbards for additional throwing daggers and then additional belt lanyards added to allow 10 total throwing daggers to attach to the rig at the start of play.

Re:Quivers - 2006/07/18 18:45 thats a cool design. looks really useful and it even holds a shorty. i do have a question though, Has leaveing the shafts dangleing down your back ever caused damage to them while fighting? Yes, hate me, hate me with all your being and let the hate flow through you!

Re:Quivers - 2006/07/18 19:36 I'm an archer, why would I be in melee range? Everthing dies if it's closer then 30 feet.......

Seriously though, not really, Carbon fibers will hold up to just about any wrap shot. Most folks are kind enough/smart enough not to baseball bat swing agains my back when there are arrows in the quiver. A slight touch on them and I know I've been hit so I haven't ever had any damage to them.

I even tripped running backwards once over a shield and did a full backwards somersault and didn't hurt them a bit. Aluminum arrows might be different, but like I said above I'm rarely in mellee range when my quiver is full. and I have started battlegames in the past with upwards of 38 arrows on me. Most the field stays away until I'm running low, though with that many arrows even when my quivers out I generally have less then 3 strides to find at least 2 arrows to pick up, and my team likes to gather them for me and restock the quiver as i mow people down. Which means I have all the more energy for the ditch field after battlegames.

Re:Quivers - 2006/07/18 19:40 it was for effect! the montage was to demonstrate the kewlness and usefulness of the design. the draw and throw is still very effective,.....unless you reach back only to realize you've already thrown all your throwies..... yeah that sucks......
