Why don't you travel? - 2005/03/28 16:16Hello fellow NHers.
I'm posting here today, in hopes of remedying a problem that we have. As I'm sure you can figure out from the title, I'm trying to find out why very few NHers travel to the other core groups to play. I just want to know what the reasons are that are keeping y'all away from other groups, so that I can work on trying to fix those reasons (providing they're fixable).
If it's travel related, ie- you don't have a car/can't drive out of the city because of parents/gas costs too damn much/other, please explain what would have to be done to get you to be able to travel.
If it's parents related, ie- your parents won't let you travel with a bunch of freaks that dress up in funny clothes and drive to Colorado Springs, please explain that.
To really be able to attack the problem, I want to root it out, and find its sources, so that in the future, we, as an Imperial Core, will become the road warriors that we used to be in the days of old.

um.. I'll give some examples for myself..
before I started travelling a bit, I hadn't really ever driven myself much of anywhere outside of fort collins, and I remember whenever my dad would take us (my family) through denver, as soon as we hit denver, all music was turned off, and my brother and I were utterly silent. my dad hated driving through denver, and when we would make the trip to my grandma's in c.springs the inevitable denver drive would raise the level on my dad's 'asshole meter' - so thus I was always a bit worried about driving to denver, hell my dad carried a gun with him whenever he went through there (he was a cop for a long time)
anyway, it wasn't until I started driving to Denver that I realized how easy it was, pretty soon I was driving to canon city and all over the place, once you push yourself out of your shell and try new things they aren't as bad as you think.
so for me at least, I guess I was just scared of getting lost in some new place and being utterly stuck somewhere with no help, but with taking those first steps I realized it weren't so bad after all.
any other issues would be gas, it's getting a bit costly so you have to budget all trips, of course you have to budget just going to work now too.. damn gas..

Plus we don't seem to have a very organized system of 'hey, who needs a ride?'. Maybe a database of willing carpoolers would help.Quiet

Re:Why don't you travel? - 2005/03/30 07:50i work fridays. generally getting out to storm keep is a wee bit difficult. i still try to pull it off a couple times a year though.
saturdays i play dnd 2every other week, and the remaining ones tend to fill up pretty quick with "shit to do"
that leaves sundays.
as for interkingdom events... i have REALLY wanted to hit a few, ever since joining amtgard. i just never manage to pull off enough vacation, enough spare fundage, and permission from the wife to abandon her for a weekend. i swear, its gonna happen!

So far, I've gotten the following replies:
- My real life is busy on the other day, and it takes precedence - It's too expensive to travel for the benefits you receive
I know that changing the 'real life' part of it is very difficult, if not impossible, for most of us. The too expensive part, though, is something that can for sure be remedied.
Here's a couple of ideas that have been mentioned so far:
-Carpooling/A carpooling database to find someone easily that's willing to travel -Some form of reimbursement from the province/empire for travelling and providing a carpooling service to other members, to help offset the price of gas.

Re:Why don't you travel? - 2005/03/31 17:51When I first joined Amtgard, I found myself in the same situation I always seem to enter when joining a large group I'm not familiar with. The intimidation of dropping oneself into a crowd you don't know isn't much fun, even if the end result may be something quite entertaining.
So another reason may be a lack of familiarity with the people you'd travel to, aside from maybe one or two friends.Quiet

Mostly the reason I dont travel is because im busy. I work just about everyday of the week ( yay for having 2 jobs ) and the days that I dont work or do Amtgard I spend with my girlfriend.
I think a big reason alot of peope in the NH dont go to other parks is because most of our populace is under the age of 16, and there are really only like 2 people in the NH with cars that would be willing to carpool ( grendel and I ) and i usually bum a ride with Grendel :-P
Another reason, and I'm going to be brutally honest here so deal with.
People talk alot of shit. Before I even knew who Sir Guy was I hated him. Guy was the biggest jerk in the world.
Zumat...Dont even get me started on Zumat.
Everyone else at every other amtgard park in the Amtgard Universe sucks.

You get people that think they know everything talking shit about someone else behind there backs and thats what happens.

I'm really sorry that you feel this way. But it's always been my opinion that if you can't think for yourself, and actually judge people for yourself, then you are just an idiot (Lukor is a great example if you follow E-Sam).
If your preconcieved notions of someone else sways your opinion of them before you have even met that person, you've been duped. Why not be an individual? Meet this person, and then form your opinions based around what your experiences with them are; as opposed to believing everything you hear, and just regurgitating the exact same lines that they do.
If this is truely the way you go about things, Edan, I fear that you are far too impressionable. I know that this will change over time, as you 'grow' into your own person, but I fear for the choices you make 'because of what you heard.' I guess just keep that in mind when you go public about something.

obie covered a lot of it, but i'll take specific note of the above statement.
part of the goals of the last empire were to bring the im parks closer together. to stop the bullshit like what you jsut said. and frankly, until this post, i thought they did a remarkable job of it.
part of the goal of this website, and specifically, this forum, was to help facilitate communication between the groups. to encourage people to from different groups to talk to one another, to become friends. to foster the ideals of the previous monarchy. to bring the ironmountains back together as a cohesive kingdom.
statements like that do nothing to help that. so i'll say it nice n simple:

you can air specific gripes about specific people all you want. i think it would be better for you to work out the issues in private with Z and Guy personally. but i won't stop it from being done here either. least its out in the open and not being hidden away i nthe shadows. though, since neither are members yet, its still a bit "behind thier back" my hypocritical friend. but, broad general statements that every other park out there sucks is not constructive in the slightest. keep it to yourself. many of us are quite capable (and well practiced) to write your opinion off, but as duke, your words carry even more weight to the newer players. and its thier opinions i'd like to see form for themselves rather than being colored by idiocy. even in jest, unless its made abundantly clear that you are kidding, its not cool.
