Siege weapons - 2006/05/07 20:14 Sooner or later i'm pretty sure i'm gonna run into a seige weapon if i play long enough. reading through the seige weapons section it only seems to talk about what a seige weapon does and what it takes for it to be operational. The section does not give any safety sepcifications for the machine for any projectiles it may fire save for the half draw rule. no weight restrictions, no padding rules for projectiles or what can be used for cores or what the head size can be.

Now the questions: is it to be assumed that the projectiles should be like throwies and arrows in construction and head size and tapeing up a wooden bolt shaft? it just says nothing, nada, zip. input please.
Yes, hate me, hate me with all your being and let the hate flow through you!

Re:Siege weapons - 2006/05/07 22:22 you know... in 7 years i have never seen a single seige weapon on an iron mountains field. that doesn' mean we've never had em, i just havn't been there. kinda sucks. though Sir Kane did make some bad ass trebuchets for rakis one year. they jsut weren't field legal.

as for safety/padding/etc... there are two types of seige weapons, melle and projectile. each must conform to the construction requirements for whatever type it is. in the case of projectile weapons, the ammunition used must conform to the requirements of hte closest projectile type.

and then... since seige weapons are usually fairly large... add some more padding to everything just ot be sure. (personal "good idea" not actually a real rule)

on top of that, in the case of the engine itself, significant care should be taken to ensure it is also safe. make sure hte catapult isn't going to injure someone itself during its normal operation.

basically in case case of a seige weapon be EXTRA careful and make sure multiple reeves have checked the whole thing out before it hits the field. of course, seige weapons are such an attention draw you'll be hard pressed not to have a dozen people playing around with it before hand.

Re:Siege weapons - 2006/05/07 23:31 Just for the record, I am currently working on a catapult and I hope to have it - or a smaller version - ready for CQ. With this in mind, I have done some calculations and have determined that the projectiles could not be safe in any fashion if they had a core....so for mine, big nerf balls will be thrown (although I really like the idea of launching stuffed Kermits from it)

Anyway, I also have a design for how to built a balista (bolt thrower...not the ball version). I would think with proper padding this would be able to have a core much like javelins. However, I would also keep away from half drawn ranges and add a no fire zone. You cant be too safe when launching big sticks at people. I would also advise no wood cores at all - taped or otherwise....just my opinion.
Hops.....Grains.....By God, my beer is a salad!
