the rise and decline - 2007/10/11 17:41 The Rise and Decline of Amtgard Nations
Joe Blow of Whogivesadamn, USA starts a Shire and gets people to join.
Theres lots of fun while these noobs are learning the great game of
Amtgard. Awards are given out and the noobs are beginning to get
seasoned. The Shire grows into a Barony with more noobs joining and
the seasoned players start to get good at this game. Lots of ditching &
battle games & feast going on. The Barony grows into a Duchy with even
more noobs joining. The seasoned players become harden veterans and
start forming into groups. They start recruiting noobs to join thier cause.
Noob wants to be part of the group, so he/she buys into it and starts
disliking the groups chosen enemies. This starts the decline of the Duchy.
Soon your down to half a dozen players who have plenty of people in
the ork, but damn few in the field. So the Duchy has to go back to a
Barony because of lack of numbers. (well some do) So the remaining
players write wonderful articles on keeping noobs and how to get along.
But still keep with the cool tactics of thier group. So we can break this
quite easy. Just say "Hi" to any Amtgarder, noob, vet, knight, who ever.
If they are a Amtgarder, they're your friend. Don't have to sit down with
them and trade life stories, just a simple, "Hi" will do. You will see this
Empire grow again. Quit just writing about doing the right thing and start
being friendly to all, sticks to frubs, knights to peasants, all of us can do
this. Denver metro is huge. Two Duchys way up north? Lets get the
word out and learn to control your sticks, he he, and we all can have
some fun. Plenty of noobs to stick and flurb is what this empire needs.

Re:the rise and decline - 2007/10/11 23:50 are you referring to anything in particular, or just posting some good ideas? just seems a bit out of the blue. "But right now I'm a little concerned about my pants, since I don't know where they are." - Valathina Nailo

Re:the rise and decline - 2007/10/12 01:10 Well it came more from reading all the forum and electric samurai post.
So I guess we could say it's out of the blue. So if I post some spiteful
stuff can I get my karma to rise?

Re:the rise and decline - 2007/10/12 01:37 re: spiteful stuff... no... karma round here is rather pointless and very fluidic... some people pay a LOT more attention to it than it deserves and seem to get their kicks out of screwing with other people's karma levels on a daily basis. even to the point of creating additional accounts jsut to do so. frankly, if i could turn it off, i would. but its directly tied to the post count, which i do enjoy seeing.

something i do want to point out... im.org is NOT e-sam. and if i have anything to say bout it (and i frequently do) it never will become e-sam. e-sam is awesome for certain things, but the community is... aggressive. something i will do everything i can to prevent happening here.

Re:the rise and decline - 2007/10/16 03:39 hey Temujin, what is the deal yo ?

"Denver metro is huge. Two Duchys way up north? Lets get the word out and learn to control your sticks, he he, and we all can have some fun."

who are you adressing? who is not controlling their stick?

I'm the GMR and if there's something going on regarding safety I want to address it, I've read and heard comments from you about "northerners" and "warriors from the north" treating folks poorly and I want to get resolution on this.
I know we spoke previously when you came to Fort Collins I thought things were covered, is there something going on that I can help with man? Am I missing something? Am I putting more into your words than I should be?

Re:the rise and decline - 2007/10/16 07:09 Hi, I'm slightly new, I've been around for maybe just about August (actually it was... it was the 4th because I turned 21 on the 5th). But, with that being said I can somewhat see the rift that is currently happening between DM and the other parks. But before I go on... I'd just like to say that this is strictly my view and it's all about what I've personally seen. I don't know about the previous history between DM and the other parks. I don't really know about other grudges/friendships so if I sound slightly off base please tell me. If you want to put a face to the words I was the DM'er who was out on the ditch field the longest at Midreign... if that helps. Got Pwned by Brennen in the shoulder a lot by a pole arm. But, back on to what the post was about...

There is a couple people in DM who personally think that people outside of DM swing slightly too hard. Me? Not one of them. But, I have heard from people that they've gotten welts and bruises when ditching from anyone outside of said province. "I" personally though have never gotten a single welt nor bruise from a single foam weapon ever hitting me. If I ever did I would seek down the guy and ask him what his problem was. I think the worst thing I've ever sustained was after getting clocked in the head one night I woke up with a massive headache. (could've also been due to the hangover though )

But, really I don't think it's not anyone in particular. I believe it's more meta-game than anything. DM is slightly more "touchy" and takes a lot more shots that could be constituted as a scrape or something flat in a different province. On the other side of the spectrum there's a lot of stuff people constitute as a "Baseball Swing" that other people could just see it as good shot that will make people take their hits.

But, it's also how the fighting is treated. The way it's treated in DM it's more of a "Let's go out there and have fun" mentality vs. a more "sport" take on it outside of DM. I mean I'm sure that it's not treated like the Communist Chinese Gymnastics team in either of the Duchies but it's less sport than that. If this were Little League Baseball, we would be part of the committee not taking score. You can learn technique and grow but there's less emphasis on attainable goals. (Not to say that there are people there actually striving for some... it's just not so ingrained).

There is a Rift though between the North and South... I don't know how big it is but I see it, I don't know the inner politics between certain people and how it's affecting the group but there is definately is a small lack of communication within those said politics.

... or I could be completely off base and this has just been a waste of your time...

Re:the rise and decline - 2007/10/16 14:32 wait... i thought hte great rift was between the Northern Holdfast and IMD?

what? too soon?

if there is a rift between DM and the rest of the IM, then i think its one of ignorance. we simply don't know you guys. you can't spend an entire event holed up in your own camp and not come out to play/fight with the rest of us. it makes it VERY difficult to make friends. you gotta travel more, and when you do you need to talk to people from outside DM. WE need to travel to you more. and when we do you need to communicate with us and welcome us. you need to talk more on the forums and email lists and get to know some of us outside the park.

its hard to say the above without it coming off like i'm saying its all yer fault. its not. its simply a natural result of the way geeks function. face it... we're all geeks... nerds... dorks... whatever. social skills aren't exactly our strong point. its very hard for a lot of us to make new friends and to learn to interact with people outside of our existing circle of trust. its also very hard for anyone to walk up t oa group of complete strangers and say "hey... i'm joe. amtgard kicks ass." it is much much harder when that group of strangers is walled up in a camp in a "defensable" position.

as obnoxious, bouncey and "overly gregarious" (read: annoying) as i may come off at times, i'm actually very shy. it takes a lot of effort (or medium effort plus booze) for me to hang out and wander at events. but its something i try to make an effort to do. some days i hole up in my camp and jsut hang with the folks i already know. just try not to let that happen every day.

if it matters, i really like virtually every darkmooner i've had the pleasure of getting to know, even briefly. unfortunately, that number is fairly small. you guys have a lot of good energy and the way you approach the game is contagious. keep it up. just knock down some of the defenses.

Re:the rise and decline - 2007/10/16 22:11 Not all DMers were in one camp. Myself and the two I camped with were not with DM at all. So we were not ALL together One thing I have learned in counceling (sp) with comunication is not to use always and never ways of thinking and comunicating. These comunication boundries have helped my family emencly (sp) btw my spell checker is on the fritz I can agree totally with the fact that our groups need to travel more and get together more. Us up there and up there down here. I have read on the forms of an a&s night at your house Rewth, could you please reply again when that is and maybe I can get some people from here to come up there and be social while working on projects getting different points of views and assistance. I know I could use some help some times and it could help bridge the gap a little. And I could let you know when we have get togethers down here. Sound like a plan?

Re:the rise and decline - 2007/10/16 22:47 Not all DMers were in one camp. Myself and the two I camped with were not with DM at all. So we were not ALL together

But the truth of the matter is.. that even on a technicality the bulk of our group was secluded away from everybody and everything. (cept for the flies) I semi take blame for the way we set up camp. I was one of the first people there and then others just followed my lead. And thus creating a giant barrier away from traffic.

And when something like that happens it's slightly intimidating. We sealed ourselves away from the happenings of the whole group.

In essence we were a lot like I was when I was first brought to the park for the first time... I didn't say anything and stayed far away from everybody until someone actually came up to me and introduced themselves. (Thus the nickname I was awarded... "Silent Steve")

Re:the rise and decline - 2007/10/17 23:04 Howdy Folks,
First I would like to thank all of you for your post. It's fun getting to know you a
little better as we all travel threw time. I'm gonna have to say that Grendal has earned
his 8th shade of cool for his wise words of " We just need to get to know each other."
Now I understand why so many hate the politics of amtgard. Is there an Amtgard
Political Boot Camp I can enroll in? Now to address the issues.

1. Controlling your sticks. We have Lord Razor who came from the Valley of the
Twin Rivers. Now he's a hard hitter. Some moonies were complaining so we
check out the marks. Yep, he hits hard and leaves a red mark, but the mark goes
away. Uncontrolled hard hits leaves yellow & black bruises. This is what I mean
about control. So learning control is hitting hard without bruising.

2. I,ve read thru all 14 post of mine & don't see me talking bad about the north.

3. About the 2 parks way up north. In Darkmoon we lose people because they
just have to far to come and no reliable trans to get here. Now with your outpost
at poplar & hampton, it gives a place to go and learn this game. With outpost
through out the metro area and not having to file paperwork for a shire, vets can
teach the game to noobs & then show up at events eager to test thier skills.
Just a thought, could be way off like silent steve, but I miss good ole seven
waters. It provided a closer park for more inter-park battles.

4. What about that silent steve, don't say much, but when he does, he says
a lot. Thanks for your outlook, refreshing, he got the amtgard flu at the
camping event and just couldn't get enough ditching.

5. Thankyou rewth, your post helped me understand our empire many times
more than the samari post. The history of amtgard is amazing and when
looked at from outside the box, is often amusing. So I say the most demanding
part of amtgard is the leadership and politics. To tell you the truth, I would just
as soon ditch. It might be the weed of amtgard, but it seems to be the backbone
of amtgard. So Darkmoon will continue to better itself and try to correct it
mistakes. So I am open to helpful hints in this leadership stuff. I'm really just
a newbie leader. My first time a just rode the bus. So I took a big step into
politics remembering what zumat told grendal, "step big, but be aware you'll
probably crush a few toes". So when I make a mistake, I'm open to rebuttal.

Re:the rise and decline - 2007/10/18 15:57 ah I must have confused some stuff I know I had heard "northerners" thrown out there as a negative. my bad.

as far as seven waters, I removed (with the agreement of the then imperial PM) all IM sponsership from them when I was emperor as they were a dead park, no one was playing/active and no one was in any sort of active communication, dead park. additionally, I never thought it wise to form 2 groups in the first place. from what I understand it was a drama issue of "we don't get along, we're making our own group"
obviously there wasn't the unity and common care/focus that you're fostering these days in darkmoon.

on poplar and hampton I don't know if Asmund and Guy are still going out. I heard some folks have gone down there a couple times and not found anyone at the park.. if you go up it might be best to PM Asmund on here before you head out just to make sure you'll be in the right place and that they'll be there.

but yeah, anyway, hope to see you soon.

love,

Re:the rise and decline - 2007/10/18 19:24 We are still there usually. Guy has had some issues and I have been out there on my own or with my son, but if no one arrives I ususally head out and grab a late lunch.
I apologize to any who may have missed me. In fact, consider me owing you a <insert beverage here>.
PM me here, e-mail me at royalamtgardnavy@yahoo.com or just call me at 303-995-7042 if you even suspect you may go out and I'll be sure to stick around longer.
It's a nice park and I don't mind hanging out.
