Strap weapons - 2007/10/25 07:27 Ok so i watched the lefty video on the IM Discussion thread and noticed the strap madu he uses. First of all is it legal? Secondly if so why wouldn't someone be allowed to make katars? When there is no light, there is dark;
When there is no dark, there is light;
When there is both dark and light, there is Bendu

jk omg!

"punch weapons" are not illegal in themselves, it's a case by case basis.
however, plenty of folks who've been around long enough to see horrible punch weapons operate under a "all punch weapons are illegal" to save people the time in making a punch weapon that will, most likely, be illegal/unsafe. In the rules there is nothing outlawing the punch weapon, however most often people make punch weapons that violate saftey inherently.

I deemed this weapon legal as IM GMR, even after getting a full on huge stab to the face from it while ditching, it's got plenty of safety compression padding on the tip, it compresses like a pillow on top of monster noodle, and the straps are loose so that the madu is not secure to the arm, which allows it to have some natural give, so even on a hit it springs back and is not solid. it's still a firm hit, but it's friendly.

with all 'punch weapons' I've encountered before this, there was no give, it was basically a weapon secured to a fist. this weapon has built in safety and give.

it is not wolverine claws, which I would have deemed illegal and confiscated immediately for use at interkingdom event late night ditching with ninja mask.

Re:Strap weapons - 2007/10/25 16:51 Any weapon, no matter how legal, can be dangerous in the wrong hands. That said- I hate the very idea of punch weapons. Hate it a lot. There are a whole lot of peeps out there in the Amtgard world who I would never, ever want to give a punch weapon to. Ever.

If you ever have concerns about a specific weapon, always always always feel free to bring it up with your local and/or Imperial GMR. We can and will ban specific weapons if they are not padded to disperse the force from a "punch" sufficiently.

Re:Strap weapons - 2007/10/25 23:26 x2 to what Tal said...

Strap weapons are banned.

Except Folcwine, or anyone else who has proven they have control and skill and can build one safely.

Re:Strap weapons - 2007/10/26 02:10 i have a major problem with:

"X is banned xcept for Y individual"

it leaves a really bad taste in my mouth. the fact of the matter is the rules do not under any circumstances ban strapped weapons. It bans unsafe weapons. a weapon's safety has absolutely no bearing on who is using it. it's either safe, or its not.

If folq's strap madu is legal, then awesome. but it should be legal for anyone he chooses to let wield it. if someone else builds a strap weapon then it should be judged on the same criteria. if the weapon is safe, the weapon is safe.

that said... strap weapons are EXTREMELY difficult to make legal.

Re:Strap weapons - 2007/10/26 03:32 I have the same problem Rewth. I just dont want a new person to log on and say "Hey! Sweet! I can make amt-legal hulk fists!" and knock someone out for making a strap/punch weapon.

They can be good. but control must be learned.

and legal weapons

And in my mind, a legal weapon in the hands of someone who lacks control or experience, is still damn dangerous.

agreed. any weapon can be dangerous, and all weapons need to pass legality checks before being used.

I see Rafeki's point - anyone can play unsafe, we want to move away from that and remove that behaviour.

The strap madu is legal and has multiple points of precaution/extra safety built into it.
any other 'punch weapon' will be dealt with, case by case for safety, like any other equipment.
