Plates in Brigandine - 2005/11/12 20:45so i've finally decided to buckle down and make a suit a of brig...
i've got the leather, the hardware, a pattern, etc. the only thing thats still up i nthe air is the plates themselves.
i'm looking at Tie Plates. they are basically flat plates of galvanized steel with predrilled holes. you use em to join two pieces of wood together end to end. they are anywhere from 47 to 66 cents a plate. which makes them great for the budget, and awesome for the labor costs.
problem is. they aren't 16 guage. stack two together and they are easily though. however, i'm wondering... do i really need to do double them up? can i do a single layer and just take a -1 to the overall value for using "thinner materials"? the rules don't allow for such thing. as far as i can tell, if it isn't 16g, it isn't a plate at all.
so the question is, how do rate the following: Brigandine, leather front and backing, the plates are steel, but not quite 16g? is it 4 points? (brig, -1 for thinner plates) is it 3 points? (thin leather +2 for "scales" even though they don't overlap) is it not armor? (because it doesn't fit the requirements for anything?) is it something else entirely?
do i jsut suck it up and try to double up each plate so they are 16g? (i'm trying to keep costs down, as well as weight cuz i'm broke and a wuss)
thats what they look like. they come in various sizes though. i'll be using three stock sizes i nthe design and a few hand cut ones as well.
oh... they are 20 gauge... which is .0396 inches thick. 16g is .0629 inches. so doubled they are .0792 which is practically indestinguishable from 14g."But right now I'm a little concerned about my pants, since I don't know where they are." - Valathina Nailo

Re:Plates in Brigandine - 2005/11/14 13:35Wouldn't full plate armor take a -1 for thin gauge?
I'd give it 4, solidly, depending on it's coverage, the spacing between the plates, and workmanship. You'd really have to half-ass it to get 3.Quiet

Re:Plates in Brigandine - 2005/11/15 16:30the rulebook doesn't have a minus for thin gauge. If it's less than 16 it's not armor which seems unfair to me. That being said I could see a -1 for 18 gauge, but 20 guage is fairly thin. I'd say double it, or possible rate it at -2 but I'd want to actually see the plates first.

Re:Plates in Brigandine - 2005/11/15 16:56the plates are still stronger and heavier (notably) than 16g aluminum plates which only incure a -1. thats my theory.
doubled, i'd actaully see a bonus for using "thicker" materials. which i'm quite conerned would actually be notably less durable, and FAR heavier than i care to wear. not to mentio nthat i have zero use for 5 or 6 point armor... even four is a stretch.

Re:Plates in Brigandine - 2005/11/18 16:34hehehe you are now the 6th person to tell me that. i'm guessing its somewhat important. --grin--
yes, i was planning to. i figure my dremel will have a bit that will work. if i can sharpen my lawn mower blade, a tie plate won't be bad at all.
also gonna double wrap the edges in electrical tape when i'm done. heard that helps keep the leather happy a bit longer."But right now I'm a little concerned about my pants, since I don't know where they are." - Valathina Nailo

Re:Plates in Brigandine - 2005/11/21 12:32And frankly, the tie plates yield to a regular file just fine, although it is labor intensive.Superstar, do you think you're what they say you are?

Re:Plates in Brigandine - 2005/11/27 03:07USE THE GRINDING WHEEL.
Assuming Takezu will let you borrow it for a workshop day.
Seriously, I filed about.. say, 50 tiles in about 3 hours. I would still be working on my own brigandine if he hadn't graciously let me use that toy of his.Quiet

Re:Plates in Brigandine - 2005/11/27 08:34dremel with a grinding wheel. much closer and personal, plenty strong enough, and it takes 1-2 minutes per plate. supra easy."But right now I'm a little concerned about my pants, since I don't know where they are." - Valathina Nailo
