Persona - 2005/07/21 16:24 I am new to amtgard and I am having trouble creating a persona. If anyone has any pointers how to make one please let me know. Karma..... WHO CARES!

Re:Persona - 2005/07/21 16:41 One pointer that I can think of is to think about what your character is fighting for. Are they fighting for thire country, or their own pleasure, or revenge (even though the last one was argued about for a bit) Is your character going to be good, evil, or neutral? It is really why they fight that makes the persona (in my opinion) then once you get that you can fill in the history. However mean your life is, meet it and live it; do not shun it and call it hard names. -Henry David Thoreau

Re:Persona - 2005/08/18 01:43 I find that treating it just like making a role playing character is the easiest way to do it... of course I'm used to having alot of information on a character as I make it (in GURPS its nice to have things known like favorite color and such as it gives you a clear guide to make your character) and as such I use a list of random things to know (be forewarned the list I'm giving you has tons of information for it, and even playing your character its highly unlikely that all of this information will come out while playing)

http://www.writing-life.com/fiction/checklist.html

This site is great for this purpose, where as not all of this information will be known by everyone (maybe only you know it) acting on all of these factors will help you give those around you the illusion of being someone else.

Now on some of the things you may want to make it easy by just saying "Eh .. his favorite color is my favorite color" (thats handy when you want to wear colors that you look good in) however as far as being a "new" person... only do that for at most 1/2 of all the questions (that way you can relate to your new persona, which makes it easier to play him/her and thats a good thing... you want this person to be you on the field... even if you get angry... or jealous... or *gasp* die) the rest try out personality things that you wish you had in real life (aka if you are pretty quiet and shy try playing an out going character) that way you can also have a real world benefit to roleplaying, not to mention it can also help you understand people/races that are downtrodden in our society. (aka play a half elf in an all elvish or human place.. and encourage people to treat you "differently") There are literally hundreds of things you can accomplish with this approach... though the most important is..... fun... if you can have fun AND do some of the above then you are in great shape.

Re:Persona - 2005/08/18 08:54 That checklist is pretty good, but there are hundreds of checklist and/or charater creation question list out there.

You should start with the very basics...

1) Is your persona historical or fantasy based?

This is the best place to start because the answer will narrow your focus after you decide. And you don't have to decide what country or world you are from at this point, just decide what of these two you want most!

2) If historical, what time and country are you from?
If fantasy based, what world are you from?

The next step is to narrow the focus even more. But narrowing your focus, you will make the task of fleshing out the details much easier.

3) Now, decide your age.

Unless there are unusual conditions in the world you are from (either type) your real life age could easily be your 'Amtgard age'.
But age is inportant because your age effects things like social status and position within your culture.

4) Now, consider the basics of your family.

Don't go into to much detail, but is your family rich or poor and why. Almost everyone picks rich is role-playing games but remember if you pick rich for Amtgard, that will mean that you will spend more money for fancy garb and other equipment for your persona. Unless you are well off yourself, rich isn't always the best answer.

This will also influence your education level.

5) Finally, decide your starting class for Amtgard and start fleshing in the details.

This is the point that the detail checklists are helpful. Why does the persona not drink booze? How does he/she feel about their caretaker? The real bare bones stuff.
