I'd like to get some leather armor, but right now I'm looking at about $700 for a full getup. I was wondering:

A) Is there any place that has cheaper armor or better selection?
2) Seeing as how a scout has 3 points of armor is that 3 points for my arms, chest, legs, and any other place I have armor or is it I get hit 3 times anywhere with a 1 damage sword and my armor is bust?

Oh and I never heard about the use of latex swords, yay or ney?

Okay:

A) People here in Colorado (an for the most part Amtgard overall) generally don't purchase garb or armor, they make it themselves. Azreal has made some pretty spiify leather armor in recent months, and Casca works for Tandy Leather and is the closest thing to a leather Guru we have in Colorado. If you are willing to learn, lots of people are more than willing to teach you. We are not the best recource for on-line purchases.

That being said, my advice is to come out and observe before you purchase anything on line.

2) Armor is sectional, with the basic sections being each arm, each leg, and the torso. If you are allowed up three points of armor, it is three points for each section. Note, however, the armor has to actually cover the area hit. So if you have a 3 point armor skirt on the goes down to your knees, and are struck on the skirt, the damage is subtracted from the armor. If, however, you are struck below the skirt, say on the shin, you would loose the leg.

Latex swords will have to be judged on a case by case basis. I don't have a lot of experience with them, but under strict interpritation of the rule book they are illeagal, as they do not have a cloth cover. However, even if we chose to overlook that minor part of the rules, I have yet to hear of a latex weapon that meets our safety standards. For example, all of the weapons sold at The Badgers Den are illegal for use in Amtgard.

Re:N00b in the springs - 2008/06/02 16:31 Thanks Uncle Willie,

I've pretty much droped the latex sword idea, just working on getting my own boffers now. I made a staff last night and I think its 7' maybe 7'6" I just have to cover it. The foam ends are about 2.5' maybe a little longer.

I guess I'll wait until Rakis to look for armor, I don't have anything against making my own armor; I just didn't know how to do it, and it doesn't seem that hard in theory.

I won't be out this Saturday, going to my girlfriend's work picnic, but I will be up at Rakis Wed-Sun. I didn't notice how much Rakis was to get in all days and also if I need to bring my own food and such.

Re:N00b in the springs - 2008/06/02 17:07 $20 a person is the gate fee for Rakis, bring your own food, drink, bed warmer. Yes, it is true that most of these things are made available to everyone. From feasts to brews being shared(if you are 21) or pleasurable company(if you are 18 or really lucky), but just like a condom better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it. If you are looking to make armor yourself I would be more than happy to help you learn and or walk you through the step necessary. Re:N00b in the springs - 2008/06/02 22:36 Thanks fo rthe Rakis info, I posted in the Rakis forum just incase anyone else came to this site and was wondering.

I'd really appreciate help on starting on the leather working, I'm foregoing purchasing armor and more garb until I see what's at Rakis (hopefully there will be some stuff as I have 2 shirts and one pair of pants... all black, I think I might get over heated very quickly)

Opp, never mind on the garb, i found some wrap pants that should be decent and maybe a few shirts... (wait, where'd my $200 go?)

You can wear whatever, but garb looks best. You may be able to borrow some additional garb at the event.

People do sell things at Rakis, but I have yet to see arrows for sale.

Keep your money in your poket, make smart purchases.

To my knowlage, complete sets of armor are not sold at Rakis.

If you want to purchase a set of armor, you would be looking at about $100 (if you make it yourself with suervision) to $400 (if you buy a really nice set).

Asking how much armor is is a lot like asking how much a car is. Do you want a Porshe or Kia?

Re:N00b in the springs - 2008/06/10 17:27 How bout a DSM, is really cheap on price, thick and looks nice, but will randomly fall appart or a bracer might just stop working for no reason (sorry car joke, and FYI a DSM is a Mitsubishi Eclipse or Eagle Talon)

I'd be intrested in seeing what's for sale, I'm not sure that all of my garb will come in before tomorrow (crosses fingers) so I guess I'll be partly "naked" under my Tunics

Re:N00b in the springs - 2008/06/11 05:57 I do not "sell" armor but I can help you make your own, it all depends on what you want and how much you want to sink into the project. Re:N00b in the springs - 2008/06/11 06:06 If you would like for me to help you get started Varvardain, bring a snug but not tight fitting wife beater that you don't care about ruining and a role of duct tape. Ask for me around HOD or Wolf camp and we can talk more about what you are looking at making or have made.
