Start Up - 2007/07/06 06:44 So Im just about to start getting into Amtgard.

Ive got these basic parameters set out to start with, but i need help and guidance to specify and create.

Class: Mercenary Fighter. General All-Use swordsman.

Weapon: Hand and a half Long Sword (AKA Bastard Sword), Flat blade about 50" total from pommel to cap. Also a short dagger about 18". Buckler.

Armor: This is where i have no clue. I dont have much money or materials. Nor do i have any way to make them.

Tell me what you think so far, and tell me what i need to do to improve, make, and utilize them.

Also my questions are thus.

When are events?

Whats the best way to start off said events (who to talk to, what to bring)

And what would be the best thing to use as a core for a 50 inch bastard sword. Im thinking pvc with a dowel, because golf clubs dont come that long.

Re:Start Up - 2007/07/06 11:36 Well, let's start with a couple questions:

1. Where are you?

2. Have you played before.

Now, to anwser the questions I can:

I have always felt there is no real advantage (save for the extra life) to playing warrior if you don't have any armor given the weapons you want to use. You can't really make armor without money or recources, so my recomendation is to play assassin. You will have to ditch the shield till 5th level, and the sword will have to be a max length of 48 inches, but in exchange for that you get access to thrown weapons right off the bat. You don't have to call yourself an assassin, you can call yourself whatever you want, so long as you meet the garb requirement of the mask and the sash, so your styling yourself after a general swordsman would work just fine.

The best core for a sword of that length, provided you can't find a golf club shaft, would be fiberglass kite spar. You can get it at most kite stroes or online at www.intothewind.com. I don't remember what diamater you are going to want, but for that length probably somthing pretty thick. It's much more expensive than PVC, but it's lighter, stronger, and at that length it bends much less. As a note, useing wood or metal as a core is not allowed, so a dowl rod inside of a piece of PVC would be a no no.

Events are gatherings usualy 1-5 days long. Whom you'd need to talk to and what you would need to bring would vary from event to event, but generaly events involve camping so things like a teant, food, and a sleeping bag are a good idea.

Re:Start Up - 2007/07/06 20:19 Yes it does.

The thickness you would want is .505 if you can.
