Alt classes? - 2007/04/24 00:40 Hi, what are alternate classes? Are they like unofficial classes or something? If so, does IM accept them?

also a list of the unofficial classes would be super

Re:Alt classes? - 2007/04/24 23:25 We do not allow credit for the specific alternate classes. These classes are credited as monsters and located in: By Night They Dance, Welcome To The Jungle, Nautical Knights, and other books with cool names.

We also used to have Alt, classes by the names Duelist and Bushi. Unfortunitly, we do not recognize them anymore/yet again.

Re:Alt classes? - 2007/04/25 02:42 basically "alt classes" have been done away with across the majority of amtgard in an effort to standardize the rules between chapters. it makes it far easier to travel from chapter to chapter and kingdom to kingdom without having to worry bout weird special rules that only apply in one place. its even worse when new players join the game and never know they aren't playing by standard rules til they move and everyone makes fun of them and they lose all their credits in "Necromancer", having wasted a whole year.

in short alt classes are a bad thing for people to play on a regular basis. playing one occasionally is great though. jsut find the rules in one of the unofficial monster books, print it out, ask permission and have at it. the permission is the important part. it ensures that you won't be playing something in a game that might confuse a new hoarde of newbs, or unbalance a quest. it also forces you to have the printed rules on hand to help dispell any confusing that does arise.

The Amtgard 7 expansion group re-wrote the five most popular alt classes: duelist, bushi, pirate, gypsy and and thief. we labeled them as "alt classes" and provided the definition that they are still effectively monsters, but that some chapters in random lands may have special rules for them. we basically tried to heavily encourage them to be played as monsters, but still brought them up to speed with the 7.0 rules.

we then simultaneously introduced the concept of "Archtypes". which are basically guidlines and suggestions for playing something that would normally be an altclass with one ofthe standard classes. for example, using Druid to play a "Shaman". or Wizard to play a "Kensai" by taking a longsword and many weapon enchantments. "Ninja" with the assassin class (or even more intersting, using scout instead).

as a new play i would HIGHLY suggest that you start out with a standard core class. get to know the base rule system before trying to pick up something out of the ordinary. use some imagination and roleplaying to effectively play a class that you can't find in the core rules.

Re:Alt classes? - 2007/04/25 02:47 fatbeard, out of curiosity, what park will you be attending? i'd be more than happy to chat with you when you come out and answer all yer questions. i'd also be more than happy to do so via email (rewth@rewth.com). the forums can be kinda slow to get the info you need and it gives me an excuse to take a break at work. Re:Alt classes? - 2007/04/25 19:12 I'm going to brighton park this saturday to see how this whole thing works. Is there another park that's usually more populated, or is brighton the main park?

Oh, and I have seen some videos on youtube and whatnot of Amtgard. Some of them are like "walk, hit, dead, walk away." while one in particular, a video of Wolvenfang, actually looked like exciting, hardcore LARPin'.
