What are my limitations? - 2006/04/24 18:47 Well, I'm working on the creation of a persona, and, while I'm very good at such things, concerning realism and creativity, I am now having difficulty with the lack of apparent boundaries in Amtgard's rules.

I'll list some of the questions that are popping around in my brain.

Am I allowed to choose any race, even one of my own creation?
- If I could, what sort of things should I avoid in a race of my own invention?
- If others create races, what sort of "minimum standard" should I have to keep up with them?

What kind of history can I have?
- Could I be world famous?
- Could I have riches, unbeknownst to others?
- What sort of occupations could I claim to have?
- Could I come from a culture of my own invention?

What kind of relationships can I have?
- Could I have a monster as a mount? If I could, what limitations would be set on its use?
- Could I have the alliance of a particular monster?
- Could I have a monster stalking me, showing up in-game periodically?
- Could I have a pact with God/the Devil?

I guess all of these revolve around a central point - what advantages/disadvantages could my persona have while remaining fair to everyone else?

Unless you have something prevalent to say, shut up.
If you don't know what prevalent means, cut out your own tongue.

Re:What are my limitations? - 2006/04/24 19:25 any of the things you're talking about would have a purely 'character flavor'
effect, ie - yes your persona could be a half dragon lich who rides a giant
sea turtle, but that won't give you any extra abilities or powers.
you could (with proper permissions from your local monarch & prime minister)
play a monster class in a battlegame,

these are the restrictions (per the rulebook)

Monsters are listed in much the same ways as normal classes, though monsters tend to have a much larger list of special traits and abilities than the normal classes do. When playing a monster, you must always carry a complete description of the monster with you, have a copy for the reeve, and wear appropriate garb. If you are a wizard or druid casting summoning magic, note that both the garb and the descriptions are part of the magic component. There are a number of ways you can play a monster in a game. They include:

Standard Battlegame:
You must get the permission of the Monarch and the Prime Minister, and cannot play Quest monsters, or monsters with a 4:1 or greater ratio. If you play a monster with a ratio of 2:1 or 3:1, when you are added to a side, the other side then gets to pick 2 (or 3 if 3:1) people for the other side. Playing monsters with a 1:1 ratio does not alter how teams are picked.
Level: When playing a monster in a standard battlegame, you play the monster as your standard monster level.

Summoned Monsters:
Some monsters can be summoned in a standard battlegame. These do not normally require reeve's permission, though a reeve can always state what can and cannot be used in a battlegame. When playing a summoned monster, a player will sacrifice lives to play the monster for one life. That player will be considered enchanted. If a player is dispelled while playing a summoned monster, it kills him instantly.
Player lives/life: This is the number of lives a player has to give up to play this monster for one life. The player cannot gain more than one life as a monster unless otherwise stated in the monster description. Players cannot give up lives they do not have. Monsters who are killed cannot be reanimated. If Resurrected, or given a life by a monk, they return as their normal class, not as the monster.
Level: When playing a summoned monster, a player's level is that of the class lives were sacrificed from or that player's level in monster - whichever is lower.

Quests:
Quests are simply special battlegames. The reeves and designers of these make special rules, and often have special monsters, which are not used in the standard games.
Level: When playing monsters in Quests and other special battlegames, the designer of the Quest or the reeve will generally set each player's monster level based on what they wish or require. Summoned monsters still have the restrictions in level.
Dragoon
Strike First. Strike Hard. No Mercy.

Re:What are my limitations? - 2006/04/24 19:42 So, basically, I can say nearly anything, but none of it can have any effect on combat/play itself. Hmm.

I guess I should've assumed that. Ah well.

Thank you, Grendel.

Re:What are my limitations? - 2006/04/25 08:07 Please consider the following...

If you write a persona history in which you are the richest individual on this side of the planet, be prepared to express that in your garb, and in other ways.

Think about it, if your persona is insanely rich, your persona will own many set of clothing, all of which are the finest available. Your persona will own tons of equipment. Your persona will also be able to afford the many staff members needed to create and maintain the many pieces of garb and equipment.

Now, you don't have to buy (or make) tons of fancy garb but what is the point of claiming to have a rich persona if you aren't going to play it that way?

Many new players of Amtgard want to create 'rich' persona right out of the gate, but end up wearing one basic t-tunic for years. It looks okay to begin with and ends up standing up on its own very quickly.

As always, you can write whatever persona history you wish, I have no control over that but I would suggest that you consider the impact those decisions have on how your persona will interact with the game as a whole.

Re:What are my limitations? - 2006/04/26 16:48 I promise, Yoto, I do think about things before I do them. Ask anyone that knows me, and I'm the one that rips apart their bad/undoable ideas, and makes my own work better than initially expected.

I'm also a roleplayer. I understand the little nuances that would result from making my persona in a certain way. I ask because I'm curious, not strictly because I want to use an idea, but because I have other ideas that could branch off of it, and because it gives me a better idea of what my limitations would be.

I don't care if I'm rich, poor, a serf, or have no liking for money. I just wondered if it was allowed. But, I will play the part in the appropriate way, regardless of my station, because I know how to roleplay, and will not allow myself to royally screw it up.

In short - I am prepared to express anything that I make up about my persona with my actions, gear, garb, and anything else of the sort.

Regardless - thank you for making the note. I shows that you're at least someone that will try to be helpful. I just couldn't let the thought stand that I'd not think about such things beforehand. I'm too proud for that - and it would leave a wrong impression.

Re:What are my limitations? - 2006/04/27 11:59 Keign can be maddening on the matter of thinking if you're used to the idea of people not properly thinking things out a 100 steps in advance. I keep expecting him to not think of something, but it happens so rarely I wonder if the guy has the ability to see the future on such matters. And he does rip up bad ideas, and he does make his own work better than initially expected.

The matter of persona's is beginning to make me wonder, because on the one hand, roleplay seems to be looked down upon, but on the other hand, the keeping of persona's seem to be high priority. I'm probably missing something.

Let me apologize if i seemed too firm in my approach. I'm not suggesting you are not the kind of role-player that thinks things thru. Nothing I offered was directed at you, personally

You didn't give any impression whatsoever...just a friendly warning.

Re:What are my limitations? - 2006/04/27 14:23 Something else to think about, whatever your character history was, it may or may not end up mattering a whit in Amtgard.

Many Amtgarders are simply joe average in a funny tabard with a funny name. They don't really have much character, and sadly there are many Amtgarders that sneer or look down upon the player with a character.

Now, don't let it discourage you from coming up with a good idea and background.

Humble beginnings, or an explanation for why you're a beginner in this world can also be useful. I really feel for the folks that start up Amtgard with the "my character is the great *title*, skilled *job*. Then they start playing a first level and are still learning to play or fight, and have to deal with their growing pains.

There are some role-players out in the world of Amtgard. My hope is that they keep at it and don't give up. It's tough to be the only one in "character" at an event, however every now and then it does pay off.

Re:What are my limitations? - 2006/05/14 22:32 For instance I have a well thought out 'background' to my persona Rolando Sanchez De Kumpania Phralmulo... Chances are? Nah, you'll know me as Rolando Darkjester and notice I dress in gypsy-ish garb. You might ask about the class I'm playing, in which my classes are tied into the persona history ( a reason for everything) but more often, we'll exchange jokes, bottles, women, and perhaps even sword passes and part amicably awaiting the next event.

Many people assume that those who fight "stickjocks" don't have persona background, or roleplay, but chances are they do or have in the past. Stick jocks may not talk with a funny accents ( well, unless your not from TX or the South, ergo all southern accents are funny) and may not act goofily ( when sober) but chances are come quest/battlegame time, they have the best strategy and ability because despite spending 4 of the 5 hours at the park ditching, they do know their class abilities enough to play a class..

The roleplay is therefore going to be different than most expect, it is generally welcomed, and as long as its not forced upon others, most of the SJ's don't abuse the flu... I mean roleplayers..

Re:What are my limitations? - 2006/06/04 01:47 I kept my persona simple...

A man who kills people when he sees fit.
I put the Laughter into Slaughter
